The fact is that there ARE exceptions -- highly rated players who don't pan out, and unrated guys who become the Chris Bordanos of the world. Here's hoping we find some (of the Bordano-types, that is).

Kind of like James Battle, huh?

No it doesn't. It proves how inexact the science of recruiting is. Battle was on the wish list of countless coaches. For a number of reasons, he didn't pan out. I daresay that doesn't mean Coach Patterson should be dogpiled for recruiting him.

He was set to sign with SMU, but we couldnt get him in.

When? Out of high school? Or after he left TCU?

I have to agree with Stallion, you want the best talent you can get period. The team that gets the better talent wins games. Its really simple. If TCU is stocking its teams with top 100 players they're going to be tougher to beat. If SMU is stocking its teams with projects, its going to be tougher to win. Sure there are exceptions to any rule, but in the long run, if you recruit the best, you'll be the best, whether or not your coach knows anything about football (eg. Mack Brown).

Um .... really? Folks, I think many in this thread agree with each other but are arguing because they like to argue and show who knows more, etc. Let's review:

1. It's better to sign talented players than players without talent
2. More often than not, those who make lists of the top players in a specific city, region, state, etc., are more talented than those who aren't on said lists.
3. There are exceptions -- there always are some talented players who get left off one list or another.
4. Sometimes players on those lists turn out to be not as good as advertised.

As I see it, this all comes down to the fact that the coaches are recruiting human beings, and that means some will match expectations, some will exceed expectations and some will not reach expectations.

Glad we cleared that up.
