Dixie QB Slater Commits
by Kevin Lustgarten of JCFootball.com, January 11, 2006 at 2:01pm ET

Corey Slater Profile

Dixie State College freshman quarterback, Corey Slater (6-1, 195), committed to SMU after his official visit over the weekend. Slater had turned down numerous 1AA offers out of Liberty HS in the Seattle area to attend Dixie. Although he was only a part-time starter last season, his high school and JC film was enough to sell SMU coaches. Slater has a strong arm and more than adequate mobility. His physical toughness is also a strength that will serve him well at the next level. Slater will have 4 to play 3 at SMU. He had also received attention from Hawaii.

1) Ran a 4.95 a year and half ago;
2) a Platoon JC QB-and that was all year long despite what some might say;
3) Was Measured at 6-0 a year and half ago-even he admits that the JC had him too tall;
4) has never been offered by anything but Division 1AA teams out of HS or JC;
Pretty well says it all.

Slater was a two star 5.2 rated QB out of high school last year. Doesn't seem to have a single offer from a D1 school when he came out. He runs a 4.97 forty and is only 6'0 tall.

Alright I don't like to bag on the coaches but this is seriously trying to pull a diamon out of the rough. Lets hope he grew about four inches and dropped about .3 seconds off that forty time during his one year stint at JC.

Rivals Ranking of 5.2, which would put him ahead of Joe Danna who was only 5.1, other players of recent vintage that have been ranked 5.2, Sean Lobo, Ross Nigh, Todd Alexander, Wilton McCray was only 5.0.

I guess I'm wondering why we're still up in arms about a Juco qb. After I was reminded of Ferguson, I really think we're in as good a shape (or better) than if we had signed a better juco QB.

we now have 4 QBs and I have serious doubts, based on actual reported measurements, whether any of these guys are over 6-1. Is there another team in the country that can make that claim?

I seriously can not understand this one so I thought I would share more stats about Corey:

2005 at Dixie JC:
62 of 133 for 4 TDs and 6 INTs.
Including such stellar performances like 4 of 22 with 2 picks against Eastern Arizona and 3 of 11 with a pick against New Mexico military.

The question becomes who is this kid related too because I can't find anything to suggest he is close to D1 material. Not to mention considering his lack of mobility, a total mismatch for our offense.

Before anyone tries to crucify me, my post was to point out how Rivals rankings scare me on this kid, not that I am happy for his signing.

This is the type of deal I was referring to when I said we should make a legacy offer of scholarship to Adam James. I stated that even if he accepted it there was always a scholarship or two that was used for someone other than the "best athlete" available. This kid may prove to be the second coming but I sure would have rather used this scholarship as an offer to James for publicity and legacy purposes rather than just fulfilling the need for a JUCO QB.

Ugh, we have so few scholarships and we toss one out to this guy? This might be a pretty good indicator on how well the coaches think recruiting is going.

Completely uncalled for. Way to kick a guy when he's recovering from a shoulderblade injury that he broke playing for those of us who are actual fans. It's one thing to try to present yourself as having a discerning eye for recruiting, rather than being a copy-and-paste artist. It's another thing to dogpile a guy who, I might remind you, started all three 2004 SMU wins. You're a real class act.

Shoulderblade, collarbone .... whatever.
You're right. Eckert gave us everything he has, almost literally. I, for one, will always be an Eckert fan.
