As much as most people don't want to spend a scholarship on a punter, this guy's impressive. Very impressive.

From Rivals: St. Louis Catholic kicker Ross Thevenot from Lake Charles ended his senior season with one of the nation's top punting averages of 47.1 yard per punt.... Offers from UTEP and Tulane .... all-American soccer player, but is eager to play just football at the next level.... 7 of 9 on field goals during his seven-game senior year, with a long of 42 yards, and had 94 percent of his kickoffs for touchbacks. .... Programs Thevenot is also interested in include Florida, Auburn and Memphis. Also calling recently were SMU and UConn.... Thevenot was recently named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of American Adidas All-American team.... Will Thevenot also play soccer in college? "I'm just sticking with football college-wise," Thevenot said. "I'm playing for my high school right now. It's going well. We're undefeated. But I will play just football in college."

For what it's worth, Carrollton Creekview kicker Kellis Cunningham was at the Mustangs' win over UTEP. Rivals says he has interest (but no offers) from Arizona, Baylor, Kansas and SMU, and attended camp at all four schools.

What is the rule on players playing football and something else again? They count towards the football scholarship limit right?

Oh my god! Sign this guy! Punters and kickers aren't the most glamorous recruits in the world, but that is a guy who wins the field position battle for a team, and I can't think of a single coach who doesn't get wound up about field position.

As I recall, many years ago, we had a kicker who also played on the soccer team. He would kick on Saturday and play soccer on Friday and Sunday. He did a lot of traveling. I forget who this was but he was very good at both sports.

Daniel Hernandez played both until they made him choose...I believe he is still in the MLS. Thunderfoot was his nickname - the boy could knock it through from anywhere.

Yup - Hernandez is back in MLS (with the New England Revolution) after playing for a while in Mexico. He was amazing -- I watched him connect from more than 50 with each foot, including a lefty 55-yarder (and with room to spare). Absolutely amazing. I always thought he had an NFL future if he wanted to concentrate on it, but clearly he loves soccer and has special talent there, so I can't fault his decision.

We have one of the best soccer programs in the country as well. If he wanted to dabble with soccer, he probably would have a tough time making the team as he would with Tulsa.
