Corey SlaterJust spoke to a Dixie State contact about Corey Slater. Here are a couple of tidbits that I found interesting. First of all, Slater, a freshman, actually did eventually win the job over hometown favorite Derek McAllister, a sophomore and second year starter who started and won the first two games for Dixie State this year before Slater forced himself into a rotation situation. But an injury forced Slater out for a few games, allowing McAllister back into the mix. Slater started and won their bowl game.
I'm not saying he's all world -- I don't know. But he's not cause for our chicken littles to get their feathers in a wad.
It doesn't change the practical reality that higher rated players (i.e. our first or second choices) are preferable. However, it provides an explanation that otherwise would have been lost in the assessment that because he was a "platoon-ed" QB, that he wasn't worth our look.
Let the kid show his stuff. Again, our first choice a couple of years ago was a kid that snubbed us for Baylor. He never finished Baylor. And Romo, ostensibly behind Eckert in the rotation at season's beginning, threw 4 pics in a game. But he also threw up a hail-mary that won one, and he led the team to 3 wins in a row, including 2 improbable ones in the home stretch. (Not to mention won the eternal admiration of my 8 year old son, Carson, when he gave his armband to him at UTEP....) This guy probably isn't going to run on water (4.95 speed doesn't), but he might wade through it rather effectively. And Justin Willis might even be the second coming...or not. Spring practice should help (I hope) sort some of this out.
"Neither player could win the job outright as they shared time all season." What part of this is hard for you to understand. How many JUCO QBs get scholarships for throwing the ball for 840 yards and 4 TDs. Hell at least the other guy had 8 TDs and almost the same amount of yards.
* Do we know which receivers were on the field with each guy?
* What the game situations were? (Tied, blowouts, running out the clock, etc.) * Which QB faced what kind of defense each one faced? * Whether the coaching staff ran different schemes with each QB (i.e. Eckert wouldn't be asked to run as much as Romo was, because Romo's more mobile, but Romo wouldn't throw as many deep out routes because Eckert had a stronger arm, etc.) I can't believe you take such shots at a guy without ever having seen him play and without knowing anything more about him than what appears on your sacred rivals page. What are the chances we hear any kind of retraction/apology from you if he turns out to be better than his numbers?
Hal I have already stated that I would be the first in line to eat my words and give an apology if Slater turns out to be good. I just think we missed on our top choices and are now signing a JUCO QB because PB said we would.
My comments have been based on the production numbers that are available from Dixie State's website. To be fair here are the stats: #12 Slater, C. I gave the guy's stats, his Forty Time, his measured height, posted articles confirming he was a part-time starter and quoted stories that say he never received another Division 1a offer either out of high school or JUCO. I'm not making this stuff up-it was all in credible news reports. I don't have to apologize for simply reporting facts from printed articles. But they do speak for themselves don't they and exactly what type of player we are recruiting.
It does appear the playing time got switched towards the end of the year, not counting the bowl game where we know Slater was hurt, he threw 67 passes in the last 4 games the other guy through 17, that is a large difference.

I'm not saying you should apologize for dittily-squat. On the contrary, I validated your point on the "The Sky is Falling Thread", I think. Thanks for the info. It will color his progress or lack of over the next few years. Yeah, we are recruiting these kinds of guys. Good catch; no kidding. The other guys didn't commit or couldn't get in. The former didn't like SMU or liked another school better; the latter, well, the admissions office has some explaining to do...but if the recruits can't get in, what is the likelihood that they would make it in school? There is not much evidence to support a direction that produces more Marcus Mosleys, anecdotal or otherwise. If that means that we have to recruit these kinds of guys for the time being, well, I guess we do.
But he's friends with Zach and Screech...AND he's dating Jessie.
"Oakleys for the outfielders..." From high on the hilltop, in Big D...
Here is my take on this..........The kid from California couldn't get in school, that's too bad. The kid that went to La Tech didn't want to be here, screw him. There is NOTHING we can do about those guy's! Corey Slater has accepted our offer and the challenge! Corey IS here, he WANTS to be here! He drove all night to get to SMU! So I am going to welcome him and pull for him, now that he is wearing the red and blue of the SMU Mustangs!!!!! Go Ponies!
He drove all night to get to SMU?? Really? I didn't catch that.
Yeah, that IS the kind of heart I would like to see on the team. You can't teach heart. If the guy has that kind of heart, Rivals and offers aside, I at least want to see what he brings on the field. Come on Slater...show us more of what we are gradually seeing the last couple of years (Bobby Chase, that is a plug for you, man!). Show us some chutzpah.
I can confirm he has a campus email address - so he is probably here (or at least registered)
I ran into one of the Pony Fan contributors last night. He interviewed Slater, and confirmed he is 6'2, and over 200lbs.
