Jankovich is coaching more than a basketball team

Postby Pony^ » Tue Dec 13, 2016 11:00 pm

He's coaching memories.

Wants NCAA run for his players.

SMU is off probation this season and has an NCAA-worthy nucleus with Duke transfer Semi Ojeleye, Shake Milton and Ben Moore. Now the Mustangs need to win an NCAA game at some point to establish credibility with the program. It's been 28 years since that last victory. But one win will not be enough. Jankovich wants to stack those March victories like he did at Kansas State.

I'm assuming Tim is #44

At Kansas State, Jankovich remains one of the winningest players in school history, playing under coach Jack Hartman. He was a four-year starter at point guard, but played his freshman season at Washington State. A three-time academic All-American and honorable mention All-Big Eight player, Jankovich finished his career at Kansas State in the school's top-10 in nine categories, including first in season free-throw percentage (.917) and eighth in career field-goal percentage (.510). In addition, he holds the Big Eight Tournament record for single-game assists (14)

Actually at the moment it doesn't look too bad.

We still have 2/3 of a regular season and a conference tourney left.

Aww heck.... let's just pack it in now.

This team didn't do too bad without a "Big". Tallest Starter was 6-7. I think they went to the final Four...

1990 Loyola Marymount Lions:

C #44 Hank Gathers 6-7 210 SR 88
PF #4 Per Stumer 6-7 210 JR 83 (C #23 6-10 215 JR 83)
SF #30 Bo Kimble 6-5 190 SR 81
SG #21 Jeff Fryer 6-2 180 SR 80
PG #12 Tony Walker SO 76 (PG #33 6-1 195 JR 76)
SG #20 Terrell Lowery 6-2 160 SO 74 (SF #4 6-10 235 JR 74)
PG #11 Tom Peabody 6-3 180 JR 73 (SG #3 6-5 205 JR 73)
PF #34 Chris Knight 6-9 180 SO 75 (C #31 6-3 200 JR 75)
SF #14 John O'Connell 6-6 205 SO 71 (SG #35 6-3 195 JR 71)
C #00 Marcellus Lee 6-10 230 SR 75 (PF #12 6-5 210 JR 75)
PF #23 Jeff Roscoe 6-9 210 SR
PG #3 Greg Walker 5-11 163 FR
PF #50 Marcus Slater 6-8 190 JR
C #31 Chris Scott 6-8 205 FR

Coach Paul Westhead

Would love to see a team try to replicate their style of play these days...but it is the exact opporite of the LB mantra...

It DOES look bad. We have virtually NO depth and no bigs. Ben E, Tom, and Mcdowell, sadly, are still scrubs. On top of that, this team has shown nothing so far on the court that indicates they will be making a significant improvement. No fluidity on offense and unorganized on D. Can't do much without a PG and 2 undersized 'bigs'.

Ben E showed signs that he might be more effective on the point than an off guard during the TCU game. That switch between him and Shake should significantly improve the impact both players can have.

I would wait to judge Wilson and McDowell until the Memphis game. We will know what they are a lot better by then, and running and pressing might get more out of both players, along with the additional experience.

We will also know in the next two weeks if the offensive and defensive changes are what cause Frolling to want to leave and if they are effective.

yeah... let's make Ben E, player with the lowest bball IQ on the team and renowned turnover machine our PG. I dont know what you saw from him that impressed u in the TCU game. All he did was dribble up the court then proceed to make a safe pass to someone on the perimeter. He is not capable of creating plays. Shake is awful at PG, but unfortunately he's the best option we have. If shake needs to play some at the 2, sterling would serve better than Ben E.

Don't give up hope yet, yikes.
Ben E. looked not awful against TCU. Maybe he can continue his incremental improvement.

I like McDowell and think he will be a solid contributor later in the season.

He doesn't actually play PG. he's simply a body that occupies the PG position. Contributes nothing in actual PG duties like creating opportunities for teammates, driving and dishing, or hitting shots. Just contributers close to nothing on offense. Only thing I'll give him is that he's somewhat decent on D
