It's kind of hard to read, but I think Scoops meant that we have so many WRs coming back that maybe Ferguson should get a crack at the QB spot. (Scoops: am I reading that right?)

Does Ferguson have one year of eligibility or two. According to his bio, he was on the Northwestern roster for three years but did not play because of injury.

Class 2A: Phillip Burley, Scurry-Rosser WR — When New York Jets deep snapper James Dearth visited his alma mater last season, Burley got an idea: Retire the No. 19 both he and Dearth shared. Burley now wears No. 81, but defenses aren’t likely to mistake the 6-foot-5, 215-pound Burley as anyone besides the receiver whose catch while quadruple-teamed last season remains a favorite replay in the Scurry-Rosser field house. “I tell our quarterback that if Phil’s got one-on-one coverage throw it to him because he’s open,†coach Virgil Crow said. Burley, who is being recruited by Arizona, Kansas and others, doesn’t only use his legs for jumping: He also kicks field goals of 40-plus yards.
Thought the last line was interesting.........

I see no reason why he wouldn't be able to play Linebacker as well.

Everyone who follows recruiting will tell you that there's no such thing as a "sure thing." There are sure-fire stars who flicker out and there are sleepers who become solid players. We all know that.
With that said, it's hard not to get excited about this guy. (Just like when his brother was recruited, I've seen him only on film, not in person.) The common comparison I've heard is Terrell Owens, who I gather is his idol or favorite player or something. I see more of a resemblance to Al Toon, the former Wisconsin/Jets receiver. Owens is built like a tight end with wide receiver speed. Toon was lankier and ran by people more than Owens, who has been known simply to run through defenders. Burley obviously has tremendous size for a high school wideout, and his speed is very good for a big WR. Where he needs the most work is on his route running. When he's told, basically, just to "go deep," he's essentially unstoppable at the 2A level, where he often is covered by 5'8" cornerbacks who run a 4.8 -- he simply blows by people and outjumps them. He also needs to learn to use his body to shield the ball from defenders whose size and strength will be closer to his than anyone he's ever played against. He'll benefit immensely from playing (and practicing) with a perfectionist technician like Bobby Chase, who could make Burley as good or better than he (Chase) is.
Beyond his prototypical physical gifts, he also excels at catching the ball. Many receivers (especially those who are simply bigger, better athletes than the players covering them) come out of high school catching the ball just by letting it hit their chest and wrapping up. Burley reaches out with his hands, snatches the ball and pulls it in to his body, putting him ahead of a lot of first-year college receivers.

Recruiting Guru, do you have a confirmed 40 time for Burley? I have never seen film on him so hearing that he has great hands is excellent news. 6'5, hands, and speed sure does make for an exciting recruit for us.
Speaking of no such thing as a sure thing... does anyone remember Jay Taylor? He was in our '01 recruiting class (I believe the last Cavan class), no idea what he was ranked. He was 6'4 or 6'5 and ran smooth and fluid. I thought for sure he was going to be big time. As it turns out he couldn't catch, was a little soft and was way too scared of taking a hit. I am betting Burley turns out to be that special reciever some of us had hoped Taylor was going to be.

We should all appreciate Recruiting Guru's comments as he obviously has seen some of our guys on film or in person, vs. stallion cutting and pasting what he reads on Rivals. Thanks for your time Guru!

That makes a lot of sense. Recruiting Guru is a recruiting analyst-for all you know he does work for Rivals. Notice Recruiting Guru never gets into the game of comparing our recruits to other teams' recruits. You may not want to hear how Recruiting Guru stacks SMU recruits up against TCU's over the last 3 years. For all we know he's the guy at Rivals raising our recruits ratings several times each year after they commit to SMU.
