I merely brought that occasion up as an example where free throw shooting killed us.

I have beat the horse dead in every post I have made that my biggest problem is that we do not run an offense that is condusive to the team we have. You have yet to acknowledge that or offer your solution. Do you honestly believe that are offense OR defense is even close to being "good"? It isn't.

You want stats, here are stats for you:

SMU is not ranked in the top 100 in scoring defense even though we play a sorry joke of a non conference schedule.

SMU is not ranked in the top 100 in scoring offense either.

That my friend, is not successfull- I don't care how you slice it.

exactly who said this team is successful? You dont need to show me stats to know that. I am well aware of our 7-7 record, thanks. but its not because of the offense we run and its not because of free throw shooting mechanics.

someone mentioned Izzo at Michigan State as an example of how to play ball. Great, love Izzo. How is implementing the Izzo way working out for Wojcik at Tulsa so far? I dont want to hear any excuses about Wojcik being new either because Tubbs is too. Nevermind, I agree with all of you, lets just hire Izzo. You're in charge Icon, I nominate you to chair the hiring committee.

Hoop Fan, I never brought up Izzo. If we could have him coaching here I think any one of us would boot Tubbs right on out the door. Which brings me to my next point...

I never even suggested Tubbs should be fired. I merely responded to a topic questioning his actual coaching ability with the opinion that his coaching style does not at all fit the team we currently have. I am not condemming the motion offense, it is actually a very effective style of play with the right personel. We just do not have the proper players to run it. I think we are hurting our chances of having the best season we are capable of this year in part bc of our offense.

With that said I am not sure that Tubbs is focused on winning this year. Maybe he plans to continue to bring in players for his motion offense (although I do not know who they are) and wants to young guys to get to know it now so when we have more personel in place they will already be experienced in it. These are things I have no way of knowing.

When it is all said and done everyone posting here just wants to see the Mustangs turn things around in hoops. I am happy (for football) yet very dissapointed (for basketball) that for the first time since I have been an SMU fan that I have higher hopes and expectations for pigskin than hoops at SMU.

now you are talking logically. And all the more reason not to tear a guy down in his second year on the job. I didnt start this thread, but the topic and the implication are very clear and you have been making arguments to that effect. Remember where Bennett was in his second year. I bet you werent even hopeful until the very end of his 4th year.

Hoop Fan, this board is just a bunch of guys at work who like talking sports. I am one of them as are you. Anything I post on here is just what I think I would do or what we should do and does not play any sort of role in the decision making porocess for SMU athletics.

I think our offense sucks. Absolutely sucks. My perspective on here has been from the "why the hell are we still running the motion offense when we suck at it?" and talking to other fans about it. Not a grass roots movement to get Tubbs fired.

I sure do not see how things will improve next year under the motion offense considering we are going to lose our top shooter. So I question the offense and I question the direction of the program, but bringing in a new guy every 1.5 years is not going to improve anything. He at least deserves a fair shot. I just feel like his fair shot has gotten off to a pretty slow start- thats all.

Anyone getting the feeling that Mustangnation and Mustangicon are the same guy arguing with himself? Schizophrenia is a terrible thing. Lefty Driesell couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag, yet won several ACC titles. The UT football coach is not the brightest bulb on the sidelines, but he knows how to recruit. Let's see how Tubbs recruits over the next couple of years and then judge him. It still comes down to the team with the best seven players usually wins titles. And as I see it, Tubbs was trying early on the inside out game against Memphis. What I saw was some brilliant no look passes go through the hands of the big men and when they did catch it, they tried to dribble instead of just turning and shooting (that is a coachable error).

Hoop Fan, please relax. You defend Tubbs like he is your brother.

MustangIcon/Nation - I think you are the same person..

Where did XTC go to provide some good insight? Where is the chicken?

I agree that all our big men (if you can call them that) - need to keep the ball up and there is no need to put the ball on the ground. That IS coachable. I never see Tubbs talking to his players on the bench - but that just might be his style. I really hope they haven't disconnected already.

If we are at the same place next year with recruiting and results, I think we can [deleted]. C-USA is a pansy league at the moment.

The problem as I see it is outside of BHop there is not one single player on this team that would be a Top 3 player on ANY team that makes the post season this year. And I am including the NIT so we are talking about 100 teams.

I also believe that statement could well hold true throughout the careers of everyone on this team, with the possible exception of Fall or Roberts.

That is why Tubbs looks so bad…he’s got no players.

And I don’t see how anyone can realistically expect this team to be tournament-worthy over the next 2 years minimum. We’ll simply see more of the same. Something Mustang fans are all too familiar with.

DickerJames, my hopes have risen for the football program due to our strong finish last year as well as a pretty good class of redshirted players from last year. Recruiting has also been going pretty well so far this season. So call me an optomist, but I really feel good thinking football at SMU is on the upswing. It is definitely the first time in many years that I can say I have higher expectations for football next season than basketball.

SoCal_Pont, I would have to potentially throw Pearson and Morris into that group along with Fall and Roberts. Pearson was a beast last year- I wonder where he went this season. I am not so much concerned about that group of 4 as I am that we are losing our best player (Hopkins) to graduation and are going to replace him with who? But you are right, we are in for something we are all far too familiar with.

alright, I'll chill out. I like a good argument, and I think people are reaching on the free throw blame, and blame in general but whatever. A&MSucks got me worked up.

Hoop Fan wrote:Gillespie's team just lost at home to Oklahoma in almost identical fashion to SMU. Whats so great about that? Drew's team just got blown out at home to Ok State. SMU gave them a much better game in Stillwater. I'm not here to bag on Gillespie or Drew, but I dont know how you can overlook the similar or worse losses these guys have had, but at the same time conveniently bash Tubbs. Does Drew get a pass because he has to play freshmen big guys like Diene and Rogers alot? Uh, that sounds like a very similar situation to Fall and Morris.

You are mistaken, I have never 'bashed' Tubbs.

But you make my point re Gillespie-- he took an undermanned team on the road, started a walk-on & came within a free throw of knocking off a well-coached & talented Okie State.

As he gets his type of players, he'll own Lil Knight, Lil Sutton, Barnes & many others. When he starts taking his share of DFW talent of fof the recruiting table, it will be unbearable watching Aggies whip up on everybody around the state in BB.
