playerI have been lost up in the Sierra-Nevada for awhile , can someone tell me who Corey Slater is?
Stats Do not look very promising. I would be willing to bet that he is going to be the back up to Willis next season.
Spoke to Corey last night. He's 6'2" and .... I forget what weight he gave me (I'll edit/add that later). Then I asked him about his 40 time and he laughed, saying "I was wondering when you were going to ask about that." He said the best time he has run, at some kind of a combine, was 4.7. I said there were a lot of reports out there that said he was a 4.9-5.0 guy, and he said that most of the times he's run have been in that range .... considering he's from the Seattle area, and he always played on wet grass -- not exactly ideal sprinting conditions. He also gave me some contacts to confirm the time (which I will). With that said, he also was quick to point out that if PonyFans are "looking for me to be Michael Vick, that's not me. I'm not going to turn the corner and run away from a lot of DBs." But he did say that he always has had a natural feel for pass rush pressure and is able to elude some pass rushers by drifting to the side or stepping up in the pocket. If someone's coming in untouched, sure -- he's going to get sacked. But he says he sidesteps more than you'd think for a guy with his relative lack of speed. And whereas his passing stats at Dixie Junior College didn't set the world on fire, he did have something like 26 touchdowns and 4 INTs as a high school senior (I'll double-check that and verify it for the Recruiting Roundup), playing in what's widely considered the top 3A league in Washington (classifications in Washington stop at 4A). And he also got a written offer (late) from Hawaii.
None of this is to suggest that, as a running QB, he's the second coming of John Elway or Daunte Culpepper or even Jerad Romo. But it appears that the "he's too slow to play" claims are a bit premature.
I hope he's not blowing smoke, too. For what it's worth, I have talked to three different (non-SMU) coaches about him, two of whom he has played for, and one of whom coached against him. Each gave glowing reviews. One said he showed notable improvement after he began working (in Seattle) with former Cincinnati/Tampa QB Jack Thompson, who worked on everything from release point down to footwork. One coach said he didn't understand the slow 40 times, saying "he's not Randall Cunningham but he's fast enough." The other traits that kept getting brought up were his arm (two of the three coaches liked his arm strength, all three mentioned accuracy) and his toughness -- all three coaches made it sound like you can beat him senseless and he keeps getting up and keeps coming back. Don't know if that makes him a great quarterback, but it's admirable, if nothing else. It will be interesting to see what he looks like at this level when spring ball rolls around.
excellent report......i think the coaches know what they are doing with so limited scholarships........
did you start that show "The Investigators"........
Sorry, but I focus largely on the southwest, mostly Texas. I've never seen Slater play, and I know nothing about him.
Based on the reports out there, he's certainly lighter than Sanders, and while he might not be as slow as some suggest/fear, he also clearly is not Michael Vick-fast, in which case some more muscle/weight might be beneficial for survival. Hopefully Coach Faucette can strap some more meat on the man.
HOORAY, BEER!
