Just how many do we take?I thought I understood from the thread on Bennett's breakfast that we only had 13 scholies this year. So far we have the following commitments:
Zac Rhodes - QB Lee Gonzales - G Joe Holmes - C Zac Thomas - DE Jordan Johnson - DE Damon Hurst - LB Anthony Sowe - LB Taylor Bon - LB Adarius Medford - CB Phillip Burley - ATH/WR Tim Crosby - ATH/CB Bryan McCann - ATH/CB That's 12...with more to come (hopefully). How many do we end up taking? Also looking at this list, wouldn't mind a few more big uglies!
Re: Just how many do we take? That's the part of the list I like the best. Yes, I'm excited about Burley and Crosby and Holmes and the rest of them, but to me, LB was our biggest need. This is very encouraging, the way they're re-stocking at the position. And apparently all three can really run.
That's true -- they aren't on all of the national lists, so you're right to be skeptical. I'm skeptical, too, I guess, but optimistic. The two HS guys most likely are not immediate contributors, but as long as they're fast, that's a start. And from what I've heard, Hurst is one of those guys who might not look the part but just makes play after play after play. Hopefully, that's accurate.
I also have Felps, the transfer from Navy coming in. That would make 14.
One thing that I would consider promising is that we lose Nutei and then possibly use that last scholarship on a guy who has two offers from schools on our level and was sniffed at by some Big 10 schools. In the past, if we lost out on a guy that late, we would end up taking a super sleeper. Of course, it could be that Crosby was in the whole time and we actually used that Nutei scholarship on a true sleeper like Bon...
Felps makes it four LBs out of this crop. All have questions surrounding them but got to believe we are going to hit on a couple. Besides, they all have some serious speed (think all are listed at 4.5 or there abouts). I am likeing the way this group is shaping up...just wouldn't mind a couple of big boys for the DL.
sweet.. we're already making bowl plans? What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.
I think the point is that everyone that was looking for a roof to jump from in december can come down. This class is shaping up decently. Not great but certainly no worse than the past few years. AND as I have stated before...the 3 game winning streak and 5-6 record help us more with next year's team than this years.
We could use one or two more high 2 star or 3 star players to really spice up this class.
this class is shaping up as mediocre-continuing a fine tradition of mediocricy since 1989. But all you guys seem perfectly contented with mediocracy so you should be very happy. Arguably this is the 17th straight year we have been outrecruited(badly) by TCU. At the best we are 1-16 over the last 17 years. WHOPPIE!
This class is shaping up as better than could be expected, given where we were a month or two ago. Burley and McCann are nice, solid adds. Perhaps we'll get three or four more solid players from the bunch.
I'm fine with mediocrity if that equals a winning season and possible bowl. This class is probably not as bad as some make it.. and probably not as good as others make it.. but the point is if we can simply build on what we did next year in results, then things will take care of itself. Sure there are question marks.. but what team doesn't have that this time of year? Our problem is we just can't seem to take the momentum we finish with and build on it.. or we have lacked anything to build on.
Now things have seemingly been kicked in what seems to be the right direction.. and there's a coach that is giving this team his own personality. Say what you will about the kids not being 8 stars or not able to shuffle through bags fast enough.. but let's wait until they get on the field before we start saying these guys are simply "filling holes." Oh yeah.. btw.. Apparently Stallion isn't the only one suggesting we should warm up the buses for a bowl game this year.. ![]() From DMN Blog.. SMU Football Yesterday, a reader asked: Will SMU earn a bowl bid in 2006? I believe so. The big question remains the quarterback position. If the Mustangs get some consistent quarterback play, they should win six or seven games in 2006. I would be interested in knowing what Keith (Mr. SMU) Whitmire and Matt (Baylor God) Mosley think.
