Tubbs Adjustments Show He Can CoachJust a few remarks to counter some of the earlier criticisms on this board.
1. Tubbs made the decision to start Morris & Fall last night and this paid dividends. 2. Tubbs moved Pearson from the 4 to the 3 position - 15 pts and 13 rebounds. Not a bad move. 3. During the overtime - did anyone notice that both Fall and Morris had 4 fouls. Tubbs substituted throughout the overtime by using Morris on the offensive end and subbing in Bamba on the defensive end. Morris scored and his moves to the basket fouled out ECU's star player. Fall blocked at least two shots in the overtime. Not about game coaching but it looks like he knows talent as well. Iam looking forward to seeing Bamba and Morris play during the next 3 1/2 years. Who knows what if Matt Williams can do some streak shooting and Epps gets more looks and begins to hit his 3 shot? Go Mustangs - Beat Rice and we'll be 9-7 with things beginning to look up.
Epps has a good stroke, there is no reason that he cant start knocking down shots in the second half of the season.
Did Pearson knock down any jumpers last night or were they all put backs and short shots? Pearson had some confidence on his jumper last year, which hasnt been there this season. Wish he could get that back, it would probably help his overall game. How often do you see a guy who makes a few shots turn it up a notch on D too?
I am very happy that the ponies got the win last night, but i wouldnt get to excited because East Carolina is 6-10. I did not listen to the game so i cannot say how they played, but regarding his coaching ability I have this response. Substituting Morris for offense and Fall for defense is not a great coaching feat. This is a very basic basketball strategy when an offensive player is in foul trouble so he does not pick up a cheap foul on the defensive end. I like the move of pearson to the 3 because he will absolutely dominate any 3 in the post but was the move because Roberts was hurt, which i think was mentioned on here earlier, and he had no other options?
yes, Robert's knee is gimpy. Rich Phillips did talk after the game with Tubbs about moving Roberts to the 3 and I don't think it was due to the injury. We'll have to see if he continues with Dez, Hop, Fall, Morris, Pearson to start
Didn't ECU play memphis to within like 6 or 7 points?
that is correct RGV and gostangs. ecu may not be looking good on the record, but the team is not without some talent. ecu also plays at home tough, so it was a good win. they took it top memphis, and to wake @ wake earlier this month and beat a decent unc wilmington team.
Go Ponies!
I am only able to watch home games so I did not get to see the ECU game but I love the thought of the new lineup. I really think having Roberts as a spark/scorer of the bench is a great move for us and having the 6'11 Rack sub in for Morris and Fall is a pretty good setup too. Unfortunately our team is really only 7 deep. I am not sure anyone else on the roster should be a D1 player (although I have not seen Williams play yet). Regardless, a win is a win and hopefully this can start us on a streak.
ECU WinI'd be the first to admit that ECU is not a quality team; however, they play well at home, have a loud, boisterous crowd, and they will win several games on their floor. They also get some "home cooking" with refs at home.
So - our win on the road is worth having and I feel good about it. Also take stock in the fact that ECU lost to Wake Forest by 4 (58-54) on Wake's floor. To illustrate my theory that they play well at home, they were within 2 points of Memphis 61-59 with only 5 minutes left although they eventually lost by 10 (parade of free throws at end.)
With Terry Holland at AD and his hiring of Ricky Stokes (point guard on final four UVA team), ECU would have to improve and they have. Holland knows basketball (several final four appearances) and certainly knows who has the ability to coach and recruit. Add to that the fact that ECU is not the most challenging school academically and Stokes should be able to retain players of moderate academic ability. ECU also has the luxury of being in ACC country, so they should get some pretty good crumbs left over after the ACC teams have filled their rosters. ECU was actually a game that worried me.
