2007 BBall Commitment Alex Malone

Postby Ponymon » Thu Jan 19, 2006 11:36 pm

6-foot-8, 185-pound small forward from Timberview High School in Mansfield, Texas, has committed to play in Conference USA.

CONGRATULATIONS ALEX!

"Alex committed to SMU tonight," said Malone's AAU coach Craig Roberts of DFW Elite. "He likes everything about SMU and has always been an SMU fan. I think he went to SMU about everyday this summer to workout with the players."

Averages 14 points and 7 rebounds per game this season, made an early commitment to SMU despite having the interest of schools in the SEC, Big 12 and Big East.

Long, athletic and with a developing skill game, Malone has a great deal of upside as a prospect.

"He already is skilled for his size and has a very good midrange game. And more than anything, he always plays hard."

A 6-8 small forward? Very nice. VERY nice. Sounds like the lineup's getting bigger -- good athleticism, too, from what I've read.

An October 2005 Rivals article indicates that he has been working hard in the weight room and also working on his ball handling skills. As a sophomore, Malone averaged 12 points, 7 rebounds and 6 blocks per game.

rated No. 37 on the Texas Hoops 2007 Texas Top 75. For what its worth they got him at 14 points per game and 7 rebounds. Don't know which is right. Hopefully since these guys are just 16 or 17 years old they might very well grow an inch or two. If Tubbs thinks these guys are legitimate then its probably good he jumps on them early before the Big 12 does. 19 pts per game and 6 blocks per game sounds better though.

If six blocks per game is correct, we may be on to something. I dont care what level you're talking about, six blocks per game is impressive.....especially, as a sophomore in Texas 5A.

Rivals lists offers from TCU and UTA so far. Hey even I'll admit that these ratings aren't too precise mid-way through a kids Junior year. It will be interesting to see how these guys are rated after the summer camps when the spotlight is on these kids.

good pickup. Tubbs is getting after it early and often this year. Half of our class for next November signing was determined this week and its not even february. You have to think we really want these guys as early as it is.

I'm a fan of someone who blocks six shots a game. That doesn't necessarily mean he'll do that in college, of course -- bigger shooters, better athletes, etc. -- but it sounds like he has the timing and instincts to block some shots. Put him in there with Bamba Fall, and the defense might take on an entirely different look.

this brings up a point. BB recruiting is different than football recruiting. Tubbs is commiting kids that are only mid-way through their junior year. In 10 days Bennett will be signing players who have completed their high eligibility. Tubbs needs to do the best job possible in evaluating these Dallas kids in their JUNIOR year BEFORE they hit the Junior summer camps where hundreds of college coaches can check these guys out. By summer it will be too late because every coach in the nation will check out the Dallas Mustangs or whatever AAU team they play on and then we got a fight on our hands. I'm hopeful that Tubbs has a better grasp on these metroplex kids who are doing better go early in their HS carrer. Big men who are average 19 and 15 as juniors ain't bad. Again, most college BB recruiting is done at these summer AAU camps where a coach can see 200 players from across the nation in a weekend-Tubbs needs to jump on them before they are showcased. Then pray that these 16 or 17 year olds are still going through a growing spurt-very possible-and will grow another 2-3 inches.
