I know Corey Slater

Corey started playing football when he was 6 and he was a 5 star cougar. From the start he played QB because he always had a good arm.
I would write on his arms (1,3,5,7 on the left and 2,4,6,8 on the right arm )so when the plays were called Corey would know which way to turn to hand off the football. One time the coaches were yelling at him about odd and even. So after practice I went over to them and told them he is only in 1st grade and he doesn't understand odd and even but if you give us the plays he will get them down. I don't know how many times the coaches from the other teams after the game was over would stop and talk to Corey personally and tell him what a great job he did playing against them.

When he was in 8th grade he would go to the high school and throw the football back to the kicker during there practice, thats when the high school coach noticed his arm.
He was the first player in Liberty high school history to start on varsity as a freshman. He played the first 2 games because there Senior QB (Mkristo Bruse currently DE on Washington state university) was in trouble and had to sit out. Anyway Corey played 2 full games but to letter you have to play in 9 quarters and they didn't put him in for any other games the whole year so he didn't letter, all they needed to do was put him in for one play and he would have been a 4 year letterman.

High School football, Liberty plays in Kingco 3A league. In the league was Bellevue high school (4 time state champs 2000-2004) Bellevue was the team that beat De La Salle 151 game streak ranked #1 in the nation at the time. Corey in his senior year if you compare games Liberty played Bellevue better then De La Salle did. Also in the league for 3 years was Skyline but they moved up to 4A in 2004 and they were state champions last year. Ok so the point is Liberty played some of the best teams in the state of washington. If he was playing in a weaker league his stats would have been a whole lot better not that they were bad by any means. Seattletimes.com has all the information in there archives of all the games but I can't find them right now. Some other newspapers for reference are Seattletimes.com, Seattlepi.com, kingcountyjournal.com and Issaquahpress.com.

Hey did I mention is rains alot in Seattle.

I know Corey

High School football camps Corey attended

He did get outstanding QB from Willamette University in 2002 and 2003.
Went to University of Washington, passing 7 on 7 tournaments in 2003 and 2004. Liberty took 7th or 8th in 2003 and finished 3rd in 2004. After the tournament in 2004 Husky head coach Rick Neuhausel went around to the final 4 teams and gave each team a pep talk and when he was talking to Liberty after his talk he asked for the QB and made a special point of congratulating Corey on his fine performance. One more interesting fact. Rick Neuhausel was fired the next day.
Corey also attended a camp (airattackfootball.com) Put on by Greg Barton and his son Tyler who is currently a coach for the Oregon Beavers. This is an excellent camp by the way. Tyler told Corey that he was the best QB he has seen in Washington and Oregon. But who knows he probably tells all the kids that.
Corey met Jack Thompson at the air attack football camp and that is when Jack invited Corey to work out with him and other promising QB's in the area. Point I'm trying to make is that I have seen him in drills go up against the best in the Pacific Northwest and wouldn't trade him for any of them. A lot of them were surprised that he didn't get a Division 1 offer right out of high school. He wanted to be a Washington State Cougar but they offered a scholarship to Acron Hall before they saw Corey at their camp and told Corey and his High School football coach they screwed up. Corey also liked Montana Grizzles and was getting a lot of phone calls from them, but Corey didn't call them back and they couldn't call him because of the NCAA regulations. They picked someone else end of story. So along come Eastern Washington with a full ride offer. But Corey turned them down because in his heart he wanted to play Division 1 football, so with Jacks help and connections he enrolls with Dixie state community college with hope of exposure to bigger schools. He takes a step back for the opportunity of a step forward so to speak. I personally didn't think this was a smart financial decision at the time, but now I'm glad where he is at and he can even say "I told you so Dad".

Dixie state Rebels
Jack Thompson has helped a lot of kids in the Ballard area (north Seattle) get into Dixie state because he is friends of one or some of the coaches. The kids he has helped are division 1 caliber but because of grades they have to go the community college route. And Dixie is known as a school for promoting up to division 1 anyway. So Corey enrolls for the division 1 route not because of his Grades, he qualified for Division 1 right out of high school.

Dixie Football, I believe Corey was the better QB even though they has similar stats, what you don't know is that Corey didn't get much playing time against Dixie’s easy opponents, when they were in trouble is when Corey saw playing time. He did win the starting job but after half time they would put derick in, unless we were behind or in trouble. During the Dixie bowl Corey started and just before the half he got hurt. He got hit in the thigh (big charlie horse) walked it off and wanted to play the second half but they didn't put him back in.
Before he left Dixie he had a talk with the offensive coordinator and asked him why he wasn't starting. Jolly said because Derick was a sophomore and that was his only reason, it wasn't on playing skills or who was better. Just saying those that want to compare Corey to Derick to do the research on the teams that Dixie played and you will see the difference between them.

Division 1 football
Ok, Corey was scheduled to go to Hawaii for a visit and he was looking forward to it. Not because he wanted to play for Hawaii but more for the weather. Did I mention it rains a lot in Seattle. I told Corey that Hawaii is nice but it is an Island and I know that he would have gotten bored there.
Corey was also going to go to SMU for a visit after Hawaii, I believe a week later, but somehow they arranged for the visit first and I was telling him how much better I felt the fit for him was. Corey's SMU visit, well he was impressed with the coaches, the area, the school, the people, everything.

The drive to SMU
Ok he didn't drive straight through, left Seattle and drove to St George, UT and then next day went to Tucson and spent a couple days with his Grandma and waited for the coaches to call and tell him to report to school and then drove the last 990 or so miles straight thru.

In my biased opinion, Corey is the best QB that I have seen, he has a strong arm. At least last year he could stand on the 50 yard line and throw the football thru the goal post that’s about 64 or so yards and he has gotten stronger since then. He has a very good awareness of what is going on around him when he is in the pocket. He stays in the pocket and waits for plays to develop or break down before he tucks it in and runs. He seems to understand the defenses and how to adjust to them. His posted run times are from a Nike camp in Eugene Oregon, but the night before he stayed up late and we got up early and drove 4 hours to Eugene for the camp. Ok he was tired but he wouldn't admit to it. His time was something like 4.9 but don't quote me on it because I'm really not sure. But he really is faster then that. Now add a 250lb linebacker chasing after him and I believe he runs the 40 in the 3 second range. You do like tall tails in Texas don't you. Right out of high school Corey was 6.0+ and 190, weigh in at SMU was 6.2+ at 219. His fault in my opinion is that he would run down the sideline and make the first down and then lower his shoulder into a defensive back instead of stepping out of bounce and saving his body. No matter what happens next year if he doesn't start it is because they already have a very good QB, but at least he is there to push them to make them better. Corey doesn't like sitting on the side lines. He's the real deal.

These opinions are just mine his Dad's and not Corey's. So don't hold anything against him for what I have said. I am just trying to fill in some blanks about who Corey Slater is.

I met Corey Saturday, and he's a very impressive guy -- I look forward to seeing him practice with the team in the spring.
