Jerry Maguire Movie
Does anybody know the story of how the stud draft prospect from SMU(Kush) got into the movie. I never noticed that before. Was there a Pony on the set or something.

I worked on the movie and have posted some of this before. SMU was giong to be plastered all over the place. They had a lifesize cut out of kushman in SMU uniforn that was going to be in jerry's office. GONE. SMU posters and pennants. GONE. SMU helmet. GONE.
When they are speaking at the kushman home, the dad had a SMU mug in hand, but you can't tell because they had to have him cover it up.
I spoke w/ art dept. folks that said SMU wouldn't allow for all of it. More pook marketing decisions. Yes, it is always bad to be out in front of millions of people in a major motion picture. Yes, the portayal of kusman as bit of a jerk, was just that. To remove the connection of a "top player" from SMU was just plain stupid.

It's actually a picture of Kush that's in his office, not Falanigan.... I'm pretty sure. And yes, it was dumb not to allow them just to plaster SMU all over the film... yeah, he was kind of a jerk, but he wasdn't a druggie or a thug... just a kid getting crushed under the popularity of being the #1 pick in the draft.
Did I mention he was the #1 pick in the draft? SMU sdhould have milked that.

I'm a little confused on this thread...who is the former Mustang in the movie (not the character he plays)? I haven't watched that movie in a couple years...

they won't let a football player be portrayed on Jerry Maguire, but the character of John Hoynes on The West Wing, the Vice President who resigns after he cheats on his wife, is an SMU alum in the background story of the show...
I know theres a difference between having logos for the school in the movie and just doing the background of the character for the show, but still...
Too bad they're cancelling west wing this season

SMUPhil wrote:Slightly off topic, but on imdb.com in the trivia about Gilligan's Island, the Professor character apparently has 4 degrees, one each from USC, UCLA, SMU, and TCU. Funny that the two pairs are "cross-town rivals." I guess that was supposed to be the little joke.
I guess that TCU degree explains why the professor could make a radio out of a coconut but could not fix a hole in the boat!
