1980 - SMU v Texas https://youtu.be/ZmI3rphQ4DY Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: I've Got a Treat for the OldtimersThanks -Great Day to be a Phi Delt!!!
I'd forgotten that not only was that McIllhenny's first start that was Richard Neely's first start too and SMU's run defense completely dominated. Plus 2 of the biggest 4th Quarter Defensive plays in the game were when [deleted] Blaylock dropped Little on a 5 yard loss on 3rd and goal from the 3 and then a couple of minutes later knocked away a pass at the goal line on a bomb I'd forgotten that that local tape delayed telecast of SMU v Texas existed but I think I watched it on Sunday the next day "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Re: I've Got a Treat for the Oldtimers (2 in Fact)So Mrydel was that clearing block by some TE at 1:16:06 just as good as PonyTE has described over the years on those long trips from Arkansas?
This video really shows it better than other highlites I've seen "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Re: I've Got a Treat for the Oldtimers (2 in Fact)No comment on the block other than Agggghhhhhhh.
The game was on ESPN. In those days they only shows one game a week and replayed it several times before the next weeks games. I watched it several times, even getting up in the wee hours of the morning for replays. But as good as the replays were to watch nothing was better than sitting on the 50 yard line in the middle of the far cat UT alums watching us win. Re: I've Got a Treat for the Oldtimers (2 in Fact)I've been following SMU FB for a little too long now.
I wasn't there when SMU defeated TCU for the right to go to the Rose Bowl, but I can't imagine a more important game that SMU has played in during almost 70 years. This game defined the Pony Express and (sorry MRydel) that Pitch defined this game.
Re: I've Got a Treat for the Oldtimers (2 in Fact)That James Mobley 4th Q Pick-6 may be one of the most UNDERRATED plays of the Pony Express history-rarely mentioned but just about closed the door on Texas considering how dominate SMU was defensively.

Re: I've Got a Treat for the Oldtimers (2 in Fact)My house was vandalized during the game. Two neighborhood girls who had been baby sitters for us got in and ransacked it. My mood still could not be changed from the exhilaration I experienced from that win.

Re: I've Got a Treat for the Oldtimers (2 in Fact)
It sealed the game. It looked to me like the Texas quarterback just about threw it right to Mobley due to pressure. One thing I remember about this game, and maybe this isn't fair, is that it was #32's game and that Dickerson got his yards in the last drive or two
Re: I've Got a Treat for the Oldtimers (2 in Fact)I love the Schlitz Malt Liquor commercial at the 2:05 mark. The 4 Tops versus Cool & the Gang. Classic.
Re: I've Got a Treat for the Oldtimers (2 in Fact)The infamous SMU/BYU Holiday Bowl was a little like that Texas game. James - 225yds., Dickerson - 110yds.
Re: I've Got a Treat for the Oldtimers (2 in Fact)That game. Thanks for the aneurism.
