Position preview: RUNNING BACKS

Post by PonyPride »

It's possible that no position in the SMU offense has more candidates for fewer spots than running back. Braeden West and Ke'Mon Freeman return after strong 2016 performances, 2015 starter Xavier Jones is healthy again, the Mustangs have added talented freshman Kayce Medlock and even discovered a couple of capable walk-ons. How will the Mustangs' offensive coaches divide the carries among so many quality ball carriers?

Any news on Aphonso Thomas? Always thought he was the best one out. I wish Traylor was around during his freshman year, he certainly would've gotten plenty of time.

except Medlock didn't really play RB last year in high school. He generally got the ball off sweeps from a flanker type position. Also played a little QB

Yes, he played QB and RB and DB. From his HS coach:

"We moved him (from Wildcat quarterback to running back) in the middle of last year. We changed our offense, because we had to. I’ve done this multiple times, and he was OK with it. We needed to do it, because we had to figure out a way to get the ball in his hands as often as possible."

he lined up originally as a flanker in 20 out of 25 offensive plays in his Senior Highlites. He only had 110 carries in 15 games which is a little over 7 carries a game-I followed the team all year-that's pretty much the way they used him all year-I couldn't believe they never made him a workhorse at that level

I'm more excited to see this group of RBs than any since I started watching (early 1990s)
