our banfor those that were around or have knowledge of the circumstances of our banning from having an entire football program, i would love to be enlightened. I know we cheated, but who doesn't. i have heard that politics played a major part in the ban, mpst specifically the gov of texas at the time had a personal grudge with an smu person.
Re: our banI am going to assume your question is legitimate and not a flame to get SMU fans upset about this issue that happened over a decade ago. SMU was found guilty of its 7th major NCAA violation regarding paying several players. It was also found that the administration namely the Board of Governors) covered up the situation and one member of the Board of Governors at that time was then Texas Governor Clements. All of this added together led the NCAA to ban SMU from football for one year and take away all home games for the next year. Rather than play all our games on the road, we agree to a two year disqualification. The school also disbanded the Board of Governors, and hired a new President (a reformer from Duke named Ken Pye). President Pye instituted major restrictions on recruiting, deleted athlete friendly majors. The result was that our football team has never really recovered from the death penalty til now. When UT, A&M and TT left the SWC to join the Big 8 they needed one more team to make 12. The choices were SMU, TCU, Baylor, Houston, and Rice. At that point Ann Richards (a Baylor alum) was Governor of Texas and let it be known that UT, A&M, and TT (all state schools) were not going anywhere without Baylor. Thus, Baylor with the fewest SWC championships of any private school went to the Big XII. A very condensed version of all the facts.

Re: our banThere's a book on the subject you might find interesting - A Payroll to Meet: A Story of Greed, Corruption and Football at SMU. It's by David Whitford and I believe the Houston Public Library has multiple copies which you could request. It's not a great book, but it has a lot of information and is fairly entertaining.

It was written by a guy who never saw the team play, and who was turned down by every player he tried to interview. Every quote that didnt come from a newspaper story is unattributed. You could have gotten the exact same information, without the authors unsubstatiated insinuations, by just reading the newspaper archives. Thats how he did all his research. A guy who couldnt get any first hand information used other peoples writing, then filled in the gaps with his imagination.

Re: our banlet's not forget that there was a little matter about an upcoming general election for Govenor of Texas between the time that SMU decided to continue to "meet the payroll" and the time then Govenor elect Bill Clements admitted to the public that as head of the Board of Govenors he orchestrated the decision to continue paying players even after two prior recent probations. If anyone should have been banned for life it should have been Bill Clements who sold us down the river just to win an election. Some of you may not want to hear that but you are pretty naive if you don't think that played a large part of the final coverup.

Re: our banI'm REALLY tempted every now and then to go over to former Governor Clements' 'temporary' residence at the corner of Hanover Street and Hillcrest Ave. (it's the house on the northwest corner...he's living here while he builds a new multi-million dollar mansion) and ask him - point blank - how the hell he can live with himself for what he did to this GREAT football program! I swear that if I ever see him face-to-face it will take all of my willpower not to punch him out! I hope to God he never shows up at an SMU football game ever again!

Re: our banThe real facts were even more egregious. On one occasion, when the "paychecks" to the players were late, several players broke into the athletic office, jimmied open a desk, and took the payments. Also, there was a lot of resentment between those players who were on the payroll and those who were not. No doubt about it, we got everything we deserved. As a matter of fact, we got off easy!
Re: our banI wouldn't say easy in comparison to Alabama, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kentucky, T A&M, OU and the list goes on and on. We deserved what we got, but there are also a number of teams that deserve what we got, and more so. You watch, Ga. will get a wrist slap. St. Bonny's or Fresno will get the book thrown at them. Just watch and see.

Re: our banno other school had a Chairman of the Board of Govenors who authorized continued payments AFTER two recent probations. There has never been a more egregious case of "lack of institutional control". WE DESERVED EVERYTHING WE GOT FROM THE NCAA.

Re: our banO.K. 'Nuff said on this subject. Let's move on to something more 'positive'. Thanks.
