Re: So what did we learn after the first game?False proposition: None of these 3 QBs are likely to lead us to a victory against TCU in Ft. Worth because this team is not that strong. We'll be about 14-15 point underdogs. Patterson would probably love to see us start an inexperienced QB like Gillens

Re: So what did we learn after the first game?Well none of our QBs were good enough to beat them the last time we did, so I think we should still play the game.

Re: So what did we learn after the first game? How was our kicking game? Possibly the one objective aspect of the game is the accuracy of the FG's and the length and height of the punts and we were bad at these things last year. I noticed we missed an extra-point - how did we look otherwise?
Re: So what did we learn after the first game?Punting was much better, but only because SFA couldn't get pressure on him. When we play real teams they will send a guy and not let him run with it which is why the net yardage was good vs SFA and will be bad against many others.
Kick off still not getting to end zone which is frustrating. Field goals looked good. - plenty of leg strength for FG, just not kick offs. Personally the special teams seemed least improved considering our competition. We have to fix this pronto.
Re: So what did we learn after the first game?Worst was the Robledo kickoff, a line drive with no hang time. They were at the 30 before our guys were. We had trouble bringing down their returner, however, give them some credit for being tough little runners. Best thing they did were the returns, IMO. Looks like UNT will test our Pass Defense.
Re: So what did we learn after the first game?In all seriousness, I truly believe we should just kickoff out of bounds and cede the 35 yard line. Our kickoffs and kickoff coverage is terrible and we used starters on coverage last night.

Re: So what did we learn after the first game? How about that SFA kicker who kicked ball out of bounce with nobody deep for SMU. I'd kick it to about the 15-20 and hope the free ball bounced around a bit

Re: So what did we learn after the first game?I could not believe we did not put anyone back. I totally agree with you. And what is worse, we called time out, I thought to correct that, and then lined up the same way again.

Re: So what did we learn after the first game?
QB is not anywhere near settled....I think the coaching staff knows Hicks is not the guy, but they also know the other two guys may not quite be ready and they know a new QB every year is not really a recipe for success....this could really haunt us. Do you "limp by" with experienced Hicks or gamble with a new guy with more long term upside? I dunno.... C-ya @ Milos!
Re: So what did we learn after the first game?We will see more of Peavy against NT.

Re: So what did we learn after the first game?we learned we can beat teams like the 'sisters of the blind' and other 3rd level schools. I suspect the attendance reflected the fact that we are playing second div. no name schools just to look good.
Will that get us to P5, I seriously doubt it. But the coach want to pad his record so he can move on up.
Re: So what did we learn after the first game? Will the IPF be built before HCCM leaves or will that be a promise to his successor?
Re: So what did we learn after the first game?
If it was promised to his successor, would he (successor) believe it? Peruna is my mascot!
Re: So what did we learn after the first game?It wasn't in his contract with SMU-and I'm 99.999999999% sure that any oral representations were merged into his contract. He's represented by perhaps the top college agent in the business. He knew the score-he's not a [deleted]. Alumni need to sign the checks for 80% of the projected cost or its not getting done. If there is blame then put it on us for not signing the checks.

Re: So what did we learn after the first game? The other thing we learned - 219 yards allowed is a pretty damn good number, regardless of the opposition. 14 drives, so about 15 yards per drive on average. 23rd in the country in yards allowed, 17 in yards per play. There were a lot of teams in the country who played D-2 teams and did a lot worse.
Defensive line showed well, and 17 was fantastic at LB. Front 7 looks much better than it did last season. Teams are going to pick on C Davis especially with the pass rush and the cushion he gives off the line. But this team is built to create enough negative plays to get teams behind the chains.
