Has the Daily campus gone WAY downhill?

Post by PonyTime »

I'm not commenting on the topic itself, but having read this article in the DC I do have to ask the question - has the Daily Campus gone WAY downhill when it comes to writing abilities of their reporters or was it always this bad:

"They incited giggles, laughter and everything in between. Cassie Nova, one of the performers, danced joyfully around the tables while holding her niece on her hip. The young girl looked delighted as she collected bills from entertained spectators. Nova is also known as James Love or Uncle James."

So are you uncomfortable with drag queens or the missing comma?

That one might have deserved the rare double comma.

Not the topic - but articles that my 10 year old could have written...

Another example:

Talent show reveals stars at SMU

The audience voted for their favorite act at the end of the show. They had a variety of acts to choose from.

A first yearΓÇÖs parent, Flor Barsallo, said her favorite was Mustang Mavericks, which was a country-stunt dancing group.

Wacker picked Sloane Fuller, a female solo singer, as her favorite.

Parent to an SMU sophomore, Bob OΓÇÖtoole chose Jeremiah Tyson, a male solo singer as his personal top.

The committee started to plan this yearΓÇÖs show this time last year, but Beams said the audition took place two weeks ago.

And stuff like this...

EditorΓÇÖs note: Following the online release of this article, Student Senate tweeted that this article ΓÇ£contains lots of false information,ΓÇ¥ which VP of Student Affairs K.C. Mmeje shut down. The Daily Campus has spoken with Dr. Mmeje, who apologized for the misunderstanding. Additionally photo captions have been changed, as mold outside of Daniel House has not been confirmed.

Wow, if those examples are indicative of the overall writing quality at the Daily Campus, I would have to agree that it has fallen off a bit.

Well here's how you post a link correctly - also seen as a form of illiteracy 8-)

Keep in mind the article linked in the original post is labeled as a guest column, so not something written by a regular staffer. As a former DC photo editor, managing editor & editor in chief, I can say first-hand sometimes you gotta take the good with the bad.

It has not gone way down, it's always been this bad. When my wife was teaching on campus, any time I visited and she wanted to shut me up, she would hand me a red pen and a DC.

I guess it's fair to say that the DC's offices are at the bottom of the hilltop.
