Who will be our next head coach?Moderators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Who will be our next head coach?Ironically the high water mark for June was after the home w vs ucf.
Re: Who will be our next head coach?I think it depends on CM's ambition. Yes, ther will be programs that want him and will pay and play in major conferences.
If his goal is money and major conferences, then he is gone after this year. But if he wants avery top tier program gig, he still has to prove himself. He still has to porve himself as better than taking a bad program in a midlevel confernce to a bowl eligilbity record if he wasnts a really top tier gig.
Re: Who will be our next head coach?Coach Morris staying at SMU long term is wishful thinking. Every competitive coach wants to prove themselves on the big stage and he can't do that here. He would absolutely KILL it recruiting at a P5 school.
I just threw up a little typing that, but unfortunately its the truth.
Re: Who will be our next head coach?Yes, he's going to leave someday. That someday may be sooner than we think. But the speculation of that happening, and then who his replacement will be, is pointless.
Re: Who will be our next head coach?
About 30+ million dollars a year in TV revenue, the thing is only P5 schools can offer that. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Who will be our next head coach?HCCM had many HC jobs offered while at Clemson. He chose SMU because we offered a significant salary increase, competitive salaries for assistants so he could a decent staff, and a recruiting budget that allowed for him to recruit ( tempo copter, social media and video staff etc.), plus it was in his recruiting wheel house.
He will look for the same qualities at his next gig: 1. Salary upgrade for him and assistant coaches 2. Recruiting budget to compete 3. The ability to recruit quality Texas kids He hasn’t had Tom Herman success that will attract a top 20 program like a Texas or Florida or LSU. But he has done enough to get the attention of Arkansas, Tech, Ole Miss and other 2nd tier P5 programs. My bet is if he can get the deal he wants at a place like Arkansas that he leaves. He must be itching to get back to full stadiums and great crowds like he experienced at Clemson. It’s only human nature. Patterson stayed at TCU because they were always paying him ahead of the curve, gave him facilities he asked for and more importantly Ft. Worth got behind the team and he became a local celebrity. Re: Who will be our next head coach?
Not necessarily, in the past lots of top tier gigs have been filled by coaches that haven't proven themselves as head coaches. All depends on what the AD/BMDs are looking for in a HC. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Who will be our next head coach?CM almost left for Baylor. Baylor. He's gone no matter what the pay is. We don't have the support to win long term. It's the truth and no coach wants that
Re: Who will be our next head coach?I think CM wants to coach in Texas. It would be a hard sell to get him to leave the state. That being said, part of the selling point for other schools is the fact that SMU has not started on the IPF. I know this is a big point of contention with him. We will not get away with promising the same lie to three coaches in a row over 10 years.
Regarding fans getting behind the team, that takes time. We are a small school in a major city with far too many alternatives on a Saturday. We need to draw the non-SMU affiliated fans to games to have a shot at selling 30K seats. That will not happen with a team that gets to 7 wins every few years and plays heavy hitters like Tulsa. If we can get 2 or 3 years in a row with 9 or 10 wins. People will start to show. If we can schedule lower level P5 schools AND at least compete if not win. People will start to show. What really screws us now is JJ's lack of recruiting and lack of effort against the P5 schools. The strides we made with those four years of bowls was all erased.
Re: Who will be our next head coach?
I am guessing we had less than 200 students at the Tulsa game excluding the band. If your own students do not support the team it is even more than difficult to involve the community.
Re: Who will be our next head coach?Does it seem like CM has "moved on" this season when it comes to social media, recruiting, etc.? Seems like he has already mentally moved on from SMU. Don't see as much of a presence from him.
And this is no attack on him - he's done a great job. But he gone.
Re: Who will be our next head coach? What does it mean, he CAN'T do it here? Does it mean HE can't do it here? Certainly Patterson did it there without the P5, a similar school with similar circumstances. I say he CAN do it here, just follow the Patterson model. Start winning the big ones/the conference. I understand HE may not want to do that, but he could.
Re: Who will be our next head coach? If CM wants a top gig he needs to stay at least 1more year and get a 10+ win season on his resume. Heck Charlie strong was seen as under qualified and he had more success as a coordinator and HC compaired To Cm. I agree he could likely land a 2nd tier P5 gig but the risk with that is if he has mediocre results he will get canned in 3 years and the dream of coaching A&M or Texas is over.
Smu is a hard place to win because you will really need 2-4 years of big winning seasons to get DALLAS to buy in unless you got mericaled into a P5 conference.
Re: Who will be our next head coach?seems like A&M may offer but I suppose they aren't top tier.
what about his son being starting QB as a junior? suppose next year is the time for a move to get 2 1/2 years at new school?
Re: Who will be our next head coach?
Aggies believe they can get Franklin...or Fisher...or the ever popular Chad Kelly. Morris will be the tier 2 choice after reality hits College Station. I personally think Tennessee or Ole Miss might make a run at him this year... stable-boy for the four horsemen of the apocalypse
