I agree with MustangXC. It's kind of like the stock market. People should be buying stock/ETFs/Mutual Funds, etc. when they're showing positive metrics that indicates future earnings growth. However, most people don't buy stock until the good news has already been released (earnings releases and analyst's opinions).

Now obviously this isn't apples to apples. However, in both situations, people are providing consideration at certain intervals based on similar criteria like sports. The "stupid" fans waits for the results to be delivered (win a NC or NYE bowl) before they buy-in whereas the hard-core fans buy-in (not perfect analogy) when they see program in the upswing.

Fine. But what exactly is the benefit of being a “hard-core” fan compared to a “stupid”one? I don’t think the hard-core fan is the Dallasite we will be initially be attracting.

No benefits but hardcore fans support their team because it's their team not because they want benefits.

Maybe we could market the team in down years as "helping you feel better about your miserable life, because someone has it worse".

Effort without benefits does not compute with younger generations

The only cure for our attendance problems will be to post a winning record for at least five years, with at least one year of us featured in the G5 access bowl.

You people are all deluded if you think this seven win season Hawaii bowl stuff is ever going to move the needle. No amount of nagging the students or giving tickets away is going to change that.

Right and the only benefit we can provide to get them to come every game is elite, uninterrupted levels of winning. That's why it's going to be so difficult to ever have a real football fanbase at SMU.

At some point you can safely conclude that SMU has less than 3,000 hard-core, die-hard fans. No hard-core, die-hard fan misses those moments especially after a long drought. That ain't going to cut it even at the P6 AAC level

Absolutely. 3000 might be over stating it given I don’t think that there are that many individuals donating to the MC.

It amuses me when people are so giddy pointing out we have no fans and never will. Then why are you here? If supporting this team is so pointless because we will never go further than where we are then why are YOU here? Especially on a message board in which one would deduce you would care. If either of you can explain why you go to such great lengths (and seem to enjoy posting) explaining why we don't and never will have support and yet still spend so much time on here, I would appreciate it.

I post because I have an opinion. And in my opinion SMU will never have a big following for many reasons. I’m an SMU fan because SMU gave me the chance at a life here, which had always been my dream. I’ve always loved live sport so attending SMU games was always something I was going to do. I don’t enjoy the fact the Dallas and SMU people would rather watch schools from elsewhere but it is what it is. It’s a sad reflection on the society in which we live. People are disinclined to put effort into anything that will not have instant reward.

But I don’t need 20k fans around me to feel SMU is worth supporting. It was worth supporting when I sent my application. It’s great when there is a big crowd at the game but I’m going to be there regardless.

Because some of us-mostly those 3,000 hard core fans have put many decades into supporting this program and are tired of SMU not reaching their potential while watching TCU and Baylor-schools we used to laugh at- become nationally competitive programs in the Big 12. Many believe SMU is blowing a major opportunity in Chad Morris to raise the national profile of this program just because we have ridiculously entitled fans and are sick of hearing the annual excuses of SMU alumni who aren't pulling their weight to make SMU a strong program. There is no excuse for SMU or any P6 school in the country not to have at the very minimum 25,000 fans there with our best start 6-2, battling for a Division Tittle against the No. 15 team in the Country on Homecoming. This is a test to prove SMU fans actually give a damn about the football program.
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Ok. I get the frustration. I graduated in 2005, our team has never been nationally competitive since I've been a fan. I'm a season ticket holder. I get annoyed at the stands too. Now, the question is if you think SMU HAS blown it or is in the process of blowing it in regards to support. If you think they have already, then just give up. There is no sense posting. If you think we are in the process of blowing it, call the AD, volunteer for the Mustang Club, etc. if you already do that, then great. Taking pleasure in telling the few fans WE DO have on this site that supporting the team is futile does no good. I don't understand what you expect to get out of it. All of us here(besides Footballdad) care about the school and go to games. All you're doing is preaching to the choir.

There are a lot here that orgasm at the talk of “the 1500” and “3000” (new number being thrown around). At least it has doubled look at the bright side.
