Home run hire? After Johnny Football he apparently forgot how to win.....which led to his firing.

Sumlin already proven to be a middle of the road head coach. Morris potentially way more upside, but also more unknowns.

I just want these P5 positions filled quickly and for Chad to remain at SMU and coach this team in it's bowl game. Tough time of year, for sure

Not so fast my friend.

"UCF: Kevin Sumlin is ΓÇ£officially out of the runningΓÇ¥ to become the new head coach at UCF, per a tweet from Brandon Helwig. Sources tell us that Toledo head coach Jason Candle is very interested in the job." -footballscoop

Well the one thing supposedly for sure in the Arkansas AD hire is that he would have Arkansas ties. That did not happen so now the speculation for coach could go any direction. Many are pushing for Lane Kiffen now.

Sources: HoustonΓÇÖs Hunter Yurachek to be named Arkansas' athletic director, replacing Jeff Long. 1st reported by @FootballScoop

Wow! He just signed Boise and BYU to home and home football games but overall the fanbase isn't too thrilled with Hunter. Well, he knows Sumlin, Norvell and Morris. He went internal to hire Applewhite but was probably told what to do by Fertitta and President.

I would agree on fbd's observation. Sumlin was constantly scrambling to find a quarterback after JF that fit what he deemed was the "scheme of the moment". He became the darling after the hire, the media and recruits loved him...until he failed to deliver consistent wins...well, that and he couldn't beat the state of Mississippi. He was doomed after the AD proclaimed that 8-4 was not enough. After the heat was turned up, he also became difficult and closed to all folks, including Big Money Aggies.

Sumlin may be in play at another P5 position, but I would doubt it would be in the SEC West. He hasn't proven to be a big-time winner.

Arkansas would be happy with 8-4. That is the difference. I am sure they would be upset after a few years of it but they would sell their souls for consistent 8-4/9-3 right now.

I may be wrong, but I think it would be hard to introduce yourself and hire a 7-5 football coach with an overall record of 14-22 in the same week.

Sumlin won 8 games after JF playing in the SEC West. Physically punishing and he was bringing middle tier Big 12 talent to the best conference in football.

Most pundits thought A&M would need 2-3 years to be competitive in the SEC coming with mid tier Big 12 talent. So from that standpoint, Sumlin was a success.

Arkansas would kill to go 8-4 / 9-3 and more importantly do it with a team loaded with Texas talent mined from the top Texas HS football programs. Sumlin gives them entre to all the top Texas programs and brings the knowledge of the SEC West.

The knock on him regarding QB development is legit.... He certainly missed on Allen (who can't win the starting job at UH) and who knows about Murray.

Arkansas's football program is reeling now and need a guy who get them some talent and right the ship quick.

Wonder how Hunter Yurachek feels about Kiffin and Miles who both seemed interested in the UH job but were passed over. If UT doesn't hire Miles, it would seem like a solid fit at UofA and a bigger splash. Like Jimbo, the guy won a title albeit ten years ago in year three at LSU. Norvell is the safe hire with his Arky background and Top 25 finish but it's not splashy.

Miles runs too similar of an offense to Bielema and got blown out by him his last two years. Won't have the talent at Arkansas he had at LSU. I think it would be a disaster.

I was thinking about Miles. Bielema brought in a different type of football to the SEC West. More smash mouth thinking he could compete with Saban. Arkansas now believes they need a complete overhaul that would take a few years. I bet Miles could transition better than many with the players they have now. Arkansas has a competent QB next year, something Miles had had trouble getting. May be a good fit.

A&M might choose to challenge your claim Sumlin knows what it takes to win. lol
