SMU_Alum11 wrote:Honestly, keeping Traylor at a low salary and saving the money makes more sense than Sonny. Here's his resume:
LA tech (WAC (updated)) 2010 - 5-7 Conference (4-4) 2011 - 8-5 Conference (6-1) 2012 - 9-3 Conference (4-2)
California (PAC12)
2013 - 1-11 (0-9) 2014 - 5-7 (3-6) 2015 - 8-5 (4-5) 2016 - 5-7 (3-6)
Never a winning conference record in the PAC. Are you freaking kidding me? This hire might have made sense had we not gotten Chad but obviously he was at Cal and probably wouldn't have left. We need a coach that can show a real 9+ win resume or an outstanding recruiter. Not a loser.
I am more and more on board with this as I look into Sonny more... The win total increases at both LA Tech and Cal are as impressive as Chad's. He has also won more conference titles and Bowl games than Chad. Did not realize that he took over at LA Tech after Derrek Dooley bolted for Tennessee...interesting similarity there... More importantly, the teams that he beat are MUCH MORE impressive than Chad's wins... At LA Tech - he beat Ole Miss, Houston, Illinois, Virginia, and almost knocked off TCU and A&M (lost by 2 to Johnny football I believe). At Cal - Beat University of Texas TWICE among an assortment of Pac 12 teams. The season he was fired - he beat #11 and #18 teams.

Chad is taking Van to Arkansas so you can all rest easy now.

Done deal, next week
Done deal on me selling bowl tickets and not renewing season tickets. Admin and Hart have given up with this hire. I'm done. At least we have basketball for the moment.
You should tweet that at Peruna.

There will be the meltdown of all meltdowns if Van and Co. are retained.

I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Sonny couldnt get a defense to save his life at Cal. I doubt hes going to be able to find anyone better than Van for the job. Yes I said it because it's Dykes who we are hiring.

So if you're done, that would mean you're done on here too? Let's go ahead and make that a reality.

This the point folks are missing. Dyles failed at Cal for several reasons, but the biggest was the fact he never had a competent defense. Bringing in another offensive coach who ignores defense isn't what SMU needs. Now I will give Dykes credit in that he has been a HC before and should have plenty of contacts to consider for DC. But if he can't/won't find anyone better, then the above rings true.

What's the Manster doing these days? Or maybe go with Thad's idea of the BOZ.

Yes but how many people want to follow a failed coach, who became an analyst to now coach at SMU. He had far better recruiting classes at Cal (most likely due to being in the PAC than him) then he did at LA Tech. I just don't see him being able to recruit anyone. To your point, he only "can" do offense and absolutely no defense, which doesn't do much more than just keeping the program, at best, level. The only conclusion I could draw is: He was cheap and we lost our ability to be market competitive with real coordinators out there.

Pete Carroll was a failed coach after his first stint in the NFL.
