Yes the refs were the worse I have seen in years but that did not cost us the game. We play good enough defense to win if we had even a semblance of an offense. We are sloppy, cannot create plays and can not score. We had numerous chances to take this game away from Tulsa a mediocre team itself but did nothing. Bamba looked like he tweaked his knee. Hopefully minor. He was not a factor tonight nor was Hopkins. Our offense has been consistent the last few games, consistently bad, and this against weak teams.
I feel like I have wasted 2+ hours of my life that I will never be able to get back. Awfull game. We could not have been more inconsitent if we tried. Yes the refs sucked, but I would say they were only a close second to how bad we sucked tonight.
Bright spot: Rack played very well and showed why with he, Morris, and Bamba we will have very solid inside pressence in the weak CUSA for next season. Negative spot: Even with BHop we can't score. What the hell will we do next season when he is gone? Everyone keeps chattering about Slim Shady but does anyone think he will be more of a scorer as a Freshman than BHop is (granted BHop had a below average game)? We desperately need a stud scorer for next season. Last observation: People have always complained about BHop being out of control on the offensive end at points in his SMU career- myself included. Dare I say that he has matured TOO much and is not aggressive enough for what our team needs? We need him to be overly assertive on the offensive end bc noone else can put it in the hoop. I hate Kobe Bryant, but BHop we need you to do your best Kobe impersination for us to win ballgames.
That will happen when the #252 ranked team (Tulsa) plays the #232 ranked team (SMU) in front of 'the least-supportive student fan base in America. They're an embarrassment.' Rankings courtesy of RPI Fan base description courtsey of KBlackstone
That was a horrible, horrible game.
The offense is horrible for three reasons: 1) No guards can create off the dribble. We have problems penetrating the lane. 2) Bamba doesn't know where to go on offense, so he ends up just clogging up the lane. 3) We are trying to establish the post. One problem is that the spacing isn't good. We have a guy on each side of the basket down low, so if one guy receives it, it makes for an easy double team. We also tend to crowd the side with guards. There were times last night where one guard is up top, shaded towards ball side. Guy with the ball is halfway to that side on the three line, another guy is standing baseline three, and then a guy is on the post. So 4 players on one side of the court, no spacing, no passing lanes, no dribble lanes, nothing doing. Another problem is that we are running a post offense, but don't give our guys down low a chance to establish position. The timing is off. We swing it to a corner, the guy down low is working hard to get position, but right before he is ready for the ball, we swing it back around. The timing is off, and with a little more patience we can get the ball into the post.
Good old day syndromeI apologize for the dose of good ole day syndrome, but does anybody else remember when SMU vs. Tulsa was actually a meaningful game with Tournament implications? Unfortunately a Willie Davis turnover put SMU on the short end of the stick, but it's sad to see how far both of these programs have fallen in such a short time.
It sounds like I was fortunate that I was unable to attend last night. Here's the email I received from a buddy who has attended almost every home game since about 1997:
I will continue to support this team and attend every home game I can, but it sure is getting frustrating sitting through these awful games.

the reason we cant penetrate is because of the fact that Tubbs keep two ineffective, at scoring at least, big men on the blocks. Our guards our definitely quick enought to penetrate on anyone - its just that there is no room - for this, we cant thank the Brainless coach who forces a style of offense that is so far removed from the strengths of the players
isn't that the present lineup now? hop, roberts, dez, pearson, fall Killen is growing on me...he plays good defense - he is just way too timid on offense...scared to do anything...
