The State of SMU Basketball

Postby jokerswild » Fri Feb 10, 2006 5:21 pm

Usually I let my words and facts state my case but then I get attacked personally instead of anything I have to say so Ill let one of my few friends that also attend games with me take it for a while, its really emotional and doesnt use facts, I figured yall would understand it better:

"The hype around Bamba is a joke, he still has no offensive skills imaginable. The Senegal Wall" as dubbed by SMU students....J doesn't call him that and he is the only student who attends the games. Our men's basketball team sucks, they are atrocious to watch.....I have been in attendance of college basketball for as long as I have been alive and this is by far the worst offense I have ever seen, so bad that I can't even watch anymore."

Mmm, Ill state some facts now, we have lost to the Terrible T's (Tulsa, Toledo, Tulane) with two of those on our home floor. We are below .500 in an atrocious basketball conference (15th RPI). Someone mentioned under the "Uh-oh" board that Tubbs cant put the ball in the hoop for the guys, but a coach can draw up plays that gets guys open looks and easy post up opportunities while our guys never get easy buckets. Tubbs can also effect the motivation of his players, who have obviously quit on him. Im not going to get in the innuendo of the message board about meetings but for the people that are protecting him I just wonder what makes them positive still. Anybody care to bring up facts, and being young isnt one of them. Freshman start for programs across the country at various levels and contribute to tourny teams.

your friend is an [deleted]. Bamba is more than hype, he had 6 freakin blocks against Tulsa. He has also shown he can attack the basket on offense. His shot needs work but its not bad for a big guy. Freshmen can play roles on tournament teams i agree, but you have to have the core to go along with them first.

As for easy buckets, Rack gets some chances. He often yips the shot but he gets easy chances. Brian Morris got alot of easy buckets. We are gonna miss having his weight to throw around in the post.

Also Bamba is starting to draw a lot of fouls. As he becomes more confident and aggressive in his offense, this will only increase. I had a few doubts at first about his free throw shooting, but he has hit for a high percentage the last several games. He clearly derserves all the attention he is getting. So far the only bright spot this season.

If you cant see the immense potential in Bamba at this point, you know very little about basketball. There aren't many, if any, BSC schools that wouldn't give up a scholarship to take a chance on our "project" at this point....7 footers with his skill set dont roll around too often.

I guess I missed the "attack" as well. I think he was called out as a Tubbs hater, but maybe that was someone else. We are playing three underclassmen with one of them, a starter injured for the season. Bamba Fall was out the first half of the season with an injury, so his development as a college player has been slowed and yet he improves game to game. Imagine if he had played all of the OOC games where he might be. Because of his slim build, he needs a banger power forward and Morris provided that. Tubbs came with an empty cupboard. His 5 star guard and four star guard committed 12 turnovers against Houston and these were the best players Dement recruited. This was a rebuilding year, we all hoped for more in Hopkins senior year, but he decided to skip class and was ineligible until Christmas and lost valuable playing time to adjust to his new teammates. Given that is anyone really surprised where we are right now?

Dez was signed after Tubbs became the coach. Of the top 7 in the rotation before Morris got hurt, 4 are from the Dement era (Hop, Roberts, Pearson, Rack) and 3 are from the Tubbs era (Dez, Fall, Morris). Of the 7, 4 are definite underclassmen and Rack has played very little before this year due to injury so he is more like a sophomore which would make it 5 of 7. We all knew this would be a challenging year. Go back and read the predictions. Thing is we are basically no worse than last year, and last year we were playing with 3 seniors and a junior. At least this year our big guys have a future and room to get better. Its obvious by his comments that Tubbs knows he has work to do to get this program where he wants it. He might not do everything right, nobody does, but if you stick with him he will get it going. And he'll do much better if we give him something to work with by fixing Moody and practice facility.

After a little research, JokersWild was "attacked" on January 11 after he started the thread about whether fans were "Still Happy with OU Loss". Someone called him a TCU fan. He then hid for a month and apparently put his alter ego/friend "Friarwolf" up to posting the other post "Uh Oh", about the vague secret meeting between vague people. He has a whopping six posts and many other posts by his "friends" which of course gives him all kinds of credibility.

Having 5000 posts does not give you any more credibility than someone with one post. Sorry to burst your bubble.

East Stang,

Derrick Roberts confirmed the players only meeting in the DMN. Here is the quote:

Roberts said a players-only meeting was held before the game to discuss saving the season.

There's a feeling that if SMU can't solve its problems, the struggles will drag through the rest of the month and could have a lasting impact on the program.

"We told each other, no matter what happens, stay positive and pick each other up," Roberts said. "Right now, we're at the bottom [of the conference], and that's not cool at all."

Maybe now you can stop jumping everyone's [deleted] about their "vague secret meeting" comments just bc their opinion of our hoops program is different than yours.[/quote]
