"...instead of apologizing for SMU, I think we need to go out in a bold [manner]...." That's the key.

How did SMU end up choosing Myers and how was his hiring perceived by the alums/fans/media? Hiring a guy from UNLV (barely above an FCS program in those days) must have created a few waves.

I wonder if I can buy that jacket at Culwell & Son?

Ron worked for the Dallas Cowboys prior to his UNLV gig and got and extremely high endorsement from them for the SMU job. If memory serves me correctly, I think Tex Schramm even saw Ron as a potential later replacement for Tom Landry, he thought that highly of him. I know they were pleased that he was back in Dallas.

Ha, just looked at the video. Looks more like a Cowboy jacket than an SMU one, plus it looks like he’s wearing his Super Bowl ring.

Too funny.
Charlie Burgin probably sold him that jacket.

That would have been enough to do it!

Thanks for posting this. I was in New Orleans at the time and anxious as learn the identity of our coach. I called then acting Athletic Director, [deleted] Davis, and Ron answered the telephone. We had a long conversation and open doors for his frequent recruiting trips to New Orleans. He craved the oysters!

I loved that guy! You could place a call to him and if he was busy you get a return call from him 5 minutes later! Always upbeat and accessible.
Long live Inez Perez!
