SMU needs to get its costs under control. This is a losing strategy.

Is it? Are we having trouble filling incoming freshman classes?

Issue here is scholarship dollars don't go as far when tuition is too pricey. Need to reign this back big time. Lots of inefficiency out there. Might need drastic action. For example - why do we even have a Perkins school? It doesn't pay for itself, has 25 pct of campus with 10 percent of students and worst giving rate of any school on campus. Dump it and expand it engineering.

What was the purpose of the Bain engagement a couple of years ago? The school has become so bloated with administrative staff in the last 10 years.

The Perkins school might have a little something to do with the "M" in SMU. However, I agree that we could certainly expand Engineering and sciences in general. There are definitely inefficiencies in our system. Perhaps some academic direction and production would be nice. I hear on another thread that we are pushing a 1 year MBA hard, but apparently it's part-time programs that are selling. We need to be conscious of needs and our offerings. We also need to be far more aggressive with our marketing and media relations. UTD is making us look slow, bloated and uninspired. AT this price, we should be the Tiffany's of education, but the quality is just not there.

Gut the administrative staff. It's a University, not a daycare. As a matter of fact, do that at every college. There's a good start.

SMU is tied for 61 as a private school in the heart of Dallas.

If SMU is able to cut costs, it can eventually lower tuition. It will increase the amount of funds we have going to actual scholarship. SMU needs more scholarships to get better quality students. Even though the quality has gone up in terms of SAT scores, it isn't going up faster than our competitors. SMU only has increased costs because they are spending frivolously on administrative bloat and buildings.

Rice shot up in rankings because they began as a "free-tuition educational institute." While SMU likely will never be free, it can eventually have need blind admissions and free tuition for families that make less than 100K--this will make it more competitive.

The problem is we have a President whose been around for 20+ years while this bloat occurred who I seriously doubt has the energy or stomach to now make dramatic and much needed cuts.

He doesn’t come across as a ΓÇÿrock-the-boat’ type of guy.

This problem will most likely not be addressed for another 7 years.

Not a good look for SMU. Just glad I attended back when I did. Really don't think I would consider SMU if I was looking today

This is surprising. I thought someone on here had shared a note about how the Board, while wanting to maximize revenue, had specifically decided to stay just outside the top 50 when setting tuition costs -- specifically to avoid appearing on lists like this.

Does anyone else remember reading that? Or am I losing my mind?

That is not cool. SMU needs to work up the lists of quality education before it moves to the top of that kind of list.

And they can’t even afford athletics with that kind of price structure?

How much can a fountain cost????

Worth noting is that SMU ranks in the 350-400 classification in the most recent Times world university ranking.
