Re: SMU basketball - related infoIts possible Guyer is the best public squad in state, maybe nation. Im with a middle of the road academy program that played them in the Elite 14. We effectively played them to a draw. To say they are the best team in the country, um no. They wouldnt be a top 10 squad in just the Grind Session
Re: SMU basketball - related infoHad a buddy at the Guyer-DeSoto game who shared with me his thoughts, he has seen DeSoto a few times and follows DFW hoops:
Hunt is a super active defender and is so explosive. He has such a quick first step when attacking/has the as good of a lift off step of any prospect I’ve seen in some time. Is great scoring at the rim. He has an okay shot, but just needs to put in the hours on it since he doesn’t need it in HS. Young is SO raw. He really needs a college weight program. He has 3 things you can’t teach length, vertical and a motor. If he can put it all together watch out.
Re: SMU basketball - related info90% of big man recruits are raw coming out of high school-most 6-9+ humans are raw coming out of high school. Think about it how many freshman inside kids on teams we have played in AAC put it together before they enter college. I can think of a few that were strong rebounders or rim protectors but very few with offensive skills. We haven't had a skilled big man coming out of high school in decades. Ira Terrell was ready from Day 1 but really can't think of another. Definitely not Jon Koncak. Chargois has great outside shooting skills but not skilled around the bucket.
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: SMU basketball - related infoChargois needs a ton of work on his offensive skills in the lane. With the sweet touch he has outside the inside game is the missing piece that could make him a very special player. I'd send him to a dance class too. He's kinda "clunky." Do we have a specific coach who works with the bigs?

Re: SMU basketball - related infoChagois needs to learn how to use his body inside. This will help his offense but the bigger issue is his rebounding. He should not be getting abused underneath fighting for boards like he currently is.
Re: SMU basketball - related info
Yes rebounding - needs to learn to stop extending his arms when he tries to box out/get position - gets called too many times for that.
Re: SMU basketball - related infoI love hearing folks discuss boxing out like its a thing or taught anymore, other than at peewee levels. Go to the ball, be instinctive, Chargois is fine on the glass, just needs to continue work on his body.
Over the shoulder skills are so rare these days, plus analytics repeatedly saying its the worst shot in hoops, why would a kid learn to play over their shoulders? He just needs an up and under for now
Re: SMU basketball - related infoFundamentals much Hoopie? Fundamentals build a good foundation. Can't slack on them. Get the fundamentals down and the rest will follow.
Re: SMU basketball - related info
Fundamentals are great for making your high school JV team as the "dependable" guy... pretty much any D1 scholarship player should be beyond that. Not that there's nothing to teach a college player; it's just not the "fundamentals".
Re: SMU basketball - related info
Well than let's get him in a peewee league this off season so he can learn those fundamentals. His instinct is to push off with his arms which leads to stupid fouls which get him a prime seat to watch the game. Fine on the glass? He is 5th on the team in rebounds (even behind our 2 guards) and he is our big.
Re: SMU basketball - related infoGuys, boxing out is what they teach smaller players.
When you are 6'9 in high school, they teach you to be aggressive and go hard after the ball. Boxing out is a waste of physical domination. So they do have to figure it out. Chargois didn't even play as a big for the most part. He needs a ton of PT as a bigger player to get used to it. The pickup games in Crum over the summer are going to do him a ton of good. All of the frosh who are still around are going to get a lot of benefit out of those games.
Re: SMU basketball - related info
Chagois needs an inside game, i don't think he needs over the shoulder skills like you said but he needs to know 1) how to establish position 2) how to pressure the defense (with post moves) when he has the ball inside 3) he needs to know how to recognize where help is coming from and where to pass to exploit it 4) he needs no know how to actually body up on someone and box them out without hand checking. A couple of those problems will likely resolve when he get's his body right. He is not fine on the glass he routinely gets pushed out of position down low giving up offensive rebounds. He also hand checks way to much.
Re: SMU basketball - related infoBack to some of the recruits that might possibly come to SMU from an earlier post:
Matt Timme's son who plays for Richardson Pearce is playing against Maxey and So Garland this evening at the Culwell Center. Should be a good game. Rod Hampton's son is playing for Little Elm High tonight and has been playing very well this year. Jank's son is playing for Jesuit tonight against Rockwall Heath. All of these are quarter final games with each team already winning two tournament games to get to this point.
Re: SMU basketball - related infoAre we talking about the same Frenchie, that as a frosh, averages 9 an 5 roughly? The same kid who's shown the most varied skill set of most any SMU big in the current era? A kid who 15 games into the season was a first team AA frosh? I'd have hope for his improvement too, if he'd shown any commitment. Oh yeah, he lost like 30lbs far earlier than say Markus. A skill set the staff raves about.
He needs rest and conditioning. You don't lose that weight, run the schedule d1 kids do, get wicked flu and just have legs again, cause middle aged whitey on the message boards, need a few defensive rebounds. He's done. Played hard, did his part and he'll be pretty savage moving forward. As for now, he's a dead carcass, so stop being vultures
Re: SMU basketball - related info
I’m not down on chagois as a player, he has had a good freshman year. If SMU is going to be good next year (tournament bound) than he, and Douglas, need to make big jumps. He does need to improve his rebounding. This years team even when fully healthy struggled on the glass. Rebounding wins games.
