Investigation Focus on Tubbshttp://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent ... 65699.html
SMU's inquiry focuses on Tubbs 11:37 PM CST on Saturday, February 18, 2006 By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News UNIVERSITY PARK – SMU officials are investigating whether men's basketball coach Jimmy Tubbs committed an NCAA rules violation by accepting money from a relative of one of his players, according to multiple sources. Tubbs, in his second year as coach, refused to comment. It was alleged that Tubbs accepted money to pay for the meals of several players. In the last three weeks, SMU officials have interviewed players, boosters and coaches, and more interviews are planned. Athletic director Jim Copeland is conducting most of the interviews. He is trying to determine Tubbs' relationship with several players and boosters and if there are any improprieties. Copeland said Friday the school has contacted the NCAA about the allegation, and that there is no timetable to finish it. He did not return phone calls Saturday, and president Gerald Turner declined comment. E-mail [email protected]
We don't need to rush to judgement. It could be baseless or not true, or it could be something as minor as taking the team to CiCis and having the wrong person pay for it.
A meal money infraction, as long as its a small dollar amount, is not a big deal and doesn't warrant any real penalty, as long as its not something that has occured many times. At least it appears it has nothing to do with recruiting.
With their record and a new A.D. coming in, I wouldn't be that surprised. Tubbs was a Copeland guy through and through. Willis to slot receiver!
Alright, so by process of elimination...
Which players have parents who could afford to give money to Tubbs to pay players meals? Which players don't have parents? Any chance it could be related to any of the players no longer on the team since the season started?
hey I'm not going to rush to judgment and I agree that it could be a technicality, but if evidence comes out this this was a substantial coordinated "slush fund" I hope he gets his [deleted] kicked out the side door by sundown.
If that's the case, how sad a situation it would be. SMU doesn't even know how to run a proper slush fund anymore? Slush fund $$ is supposed to go TO the player's families....remember ED didn't buy Ron Meyer a house, or Jackie Sherrill a Trans Am. The kid from Midland didn't help fill Franchione's pockets; it's the other way around. Maybe we should've hired a special assistant from Baylor to show us how it's properly done. ***note: most of the above was written in jest***
i bet you do, but we all know there is no substantial slush fund going on. Give me a frickin break.
We don't need this againI'm inclined to believe that the violations are minor, but we don't need them either. The problem must have made the team focus for the UCF game though.
Sam I Am
Why would such a small thing even get reported? Copeland needs to go now. If we were paying players directly or giving them luxury cars to drive then I could understand. Who gives a flip if a meal was paid for? Remember, folks...there is a reason SMU is bad. They do it to themselves and they expect us to contribute money to the programs and attend games...please. Until this whole athletic department from the Board of Directors down to the marketing people show me a real commitment to winning then they all can kiss my red rosy you know what.
Stallion .....Stallion....you are a tool. I do not like to resort to name calling but I do call them like I see them. How about someone shutting the door on your [deleted]. Give me a break. You really come off bad spewing forth your garbage.
If you know the details to all of this pay for meals thing, go ahead and tell us. You are the expert afterall.
