SMU adds QB with NFL bloodlines

Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.) quarterback Derek Green (6-3, 185) announced via Twitter that he will play for SMU. He is the son of former NFL quarterback Trent Green.

Won Gatorade Player of the Year and USA Today Offensive Player of the Year honors in Missouri last fall. He threw for 2,638 yards and 33 touchdowns his senior season, piloting the Hawklets to a 12-2 record and the MSHSAA Class 6 Championship game in St. Louis.

What's interesting in this article is the quote by his coach:

He was 6-1 when this article took place. Multiple listings have him at 6-3 or even 6-4 now. Rivals has him at 6-3 185:

In the highlights I did not see 6-3. Was thinking he must have grown a few inches. OK great passing and good footwork. Great catch for Dykes and SMU. He may even grow an inch or 2 and put on some LB's.

If he isn't 6'3, it might be an indication that Peavy will have a chance to compete for the job. In this offense, smaller QBs can be successful.

There's a photo on Green's Twitter page (sorry, I can't get the image to copy) that shows him standing with Trent on his visit to Pitt, and it looks like Derek might be a little bit taller than his dad. If Trent really is 6'4" then height is not an issue.

BTW - his older brother TJ Green is a walk on at Northwestern. Won similar awards and had similar stats as his younger brother. Seems like a great family to welcome to SMU!
