DJ Gillins transfersSigned with UTSA.
Re: DJ Gillins transfersGood for him.
Hicks clearly is the starter, and it sounded in the spring like Sonny Dykes really likes Brown. So now it's Hicks, Brown, Peavey/Upshaw? SMU! SMU! SMU!
Re: DJ Gillins transfersHicks/Upshaw/Peevy
Unless there's an injury Brown desperately needs to redshirt. Upshaw is a pretty darn good athlete-may not believe it but he's substantially quicker and faster than Brown-once put up over 597 yards in a game (332 rushing 265 rushing -3 TDs passing 4 running)-and was the USA Today National Player of the week. He's also more refined in the passing game. Eventually when Brown has more experience he has a high upside but he's erratic with very mediocre form in every game highlite I've seen. Even with poor technique he has an extremely strong arm though, Needs seasoning-hopefully he won't be needed next year. http://usatodayhss.com/2016/austin-upsh ... f-the-week Last edited by Stallion on Thu Apr 26, 2018 9:53 pm, edited 3 times in total.

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: DJ Gillins transfersI hope he does redshirt, but it sounded like he got a lot of reps with the second team offense in the spring.
Partly because Gillins was hurt, but still took snaps ahead of the others. Maybe that was just a crash course to see how much he could pick up? Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
Re: DJ Gillins transfersBrown and Upshaw were fighting for the second team reps with Gillins hurt.
Gillins had a strong arm, but no arc, no touch. He was a pick waiting to happen. Brown and Upshaw both have a better feel in the passing game than he did, even if they don't have the arm strength, and they are both mobile enough. I would think Upshaw would get every opportunity to be the backup, but the players absolutely love Brown. He has "it" from an electric standpoint. Hicks is very durable and backup might not see any time, but if he goes down it might be difficult to stay away from Brown. Peavey doesn't get a lot of PT, but man he sure leads the team on scoring drives every time. Very mobile as well.
