Jimmy Tubbs.........not a good coachThe 'Stangs have more talent than most of the teams I have seen them play. However, they have one of the worst offenses and the worst effort I have ever seen. I think they have set maybe 4 screens all year long. Even when they sort of try and set one they just jog to the right spot and pretend like they are setting a screen while the defender easily runs around them. They don't cut hard, they aren't physical, and they play absolutely no team game. It is kind of depressing watching these pretty immensely talented guys hang around against teams they are better than with a bunch of one on one plays and lackluster defense.
And it is even more depressing watching the end of a game when they are down 7 or 8 to a bad team. Suddenly they are pressing, diving for loose balls, running, high fiving.......doing things that work. Then they suddenly come back from 8 down in a minute. Where is this the whole game? I have to blame this on Jimmy Tubbs. I had high hopes for the guy, but any coach that can watch his team set ZERO screens and lack as much effort as they do obviously isn't getting the job done. I mean seriously, Tulsa should not be within 20 points of this team, much less beating them. The two things that should be constant from any well coached team is effort and the ability to at least try and run an offense. I can take it when players shoot bad or are beaten by a superior team, but it drives me crazy to watch 12 guys plus their coach pretty much waste a whole lot of god given talent that I would love to have.
Sorry,
But I have to violently disagree. This basketball program was broke bad and it will take time to turn it around. We play defense now better than we ever have and Coach Tubbs is trying to get the guys to play hard. I too am frustrated with the offensive output...but we need to give it time, at this point , we just don't have many scorers. Give Tubbs time to get his players in here and teach them how to play. In four years from now I bet we are competing for the CUSA crown and dancing. Go Ponies.
We had tons of makable shot opportunities down low where you want to have shots, and our guys flat out couldn't shoot or hold onto good no-look passes. Fall, Rack, Ike had cement hands. It was again a physical game and we are not physical underneath. Now Hopkins was being shadowed man-to-man and I agree there were not many screens last night to free him up. His best game is on transition and Tulsa kept their point guard back to shut him off in transition. We didn't make them pay for that strategy because our big men couldn't hit their shots. On a positive note, I was pleased and surprised by Epps play.
So we are back to "It is never the coach's fault" bit again? I am not saying I think Tubbs should be fired, I am just curious. Because, when you start criticizing Phil Bennett for his coaching job or his personal recruiting job, I would like to know in advance when you change back.
Oh, btw. Can anybody name someone else that was interviewed for the SMU job at the same time as Tubbs? Oh, yeah. Doug Wojcik. Where is Doug Wojcik now? Oh, yeah. Tulsa. What is Wojcik's record as a head coach against Tubbs and SMU? Oh, yeah. 2-0.
I do remember that Blog. It hurts to see it in print here. But truthfully those comparisons can't be taken as proof that Tubbs isn't as good. I am not exactly a Tubbs fan and I would say we can't read too much into that 0-2 just yet.
Unrealted question. Did U of H get Penders before or after we got Tubbs? I don't remember hearing about us even looking at Penders, who coincidently has shown people how to turn a program around QUICKLY. Also coaches a fun exciting style that is very fan friendly. I will admit that his ease of transferring in JUCOs has contributed to his success, but buy do I wish we could have gotten him here.
oh please, you wouldnt want Tulsa's record this season either. Hardly proof of anything. And if Tubbs beats Tulsa twice next season, I'm confident you won't say a word about it.
Blog,
Not that Stallion needs anyone to defend him, but I think he was referring to the over the top post that started this thread. For anyone to suggest that this team should be beating anyone by twenty points on a regular basis is laughable at best. Hell, ask Tubbs that question and see what his response would be. But I also think you were pointing out something from Stallions previous arguments about coaches as well.
Sorry Weir, I don't think any of us like to see what is going on, but the "god given talent" isn't there on this team. I will agree that some of what I seen so far from Tubbs I don't like either.
Not sure if you have watched all the games but: we can't hit a layup, run a fast break, or shoot an open jump shot while turning it over 20 times a game. In the bad games, we score about 15-20pts in the 1st half.
if Tubbs needs to teach guys to make layups and how to shoot 15 foot jump shots at this level, forget it. This isn't the YMCA. College players can either shoot it or they can't. I love the argument about free throws being all coaching too. Guess who was the National coach of the year last year? Bruce Weber, Illinois. Guess whose team this year shoots 62% from the line, worst in the Big 10 and one of the worst in the county? You gots it, Illinois. Coaches cannot make shots for players and they cannot change below average shooters into good ones. Does not happen.
And I am objective about this. SMU shoots free throws better than #8 Illinois. That does NOT make Tubbs a better coach than Bruce Weber in any way. Its up to the players to make free throws, and open 15 footers and layups for godsake.
If coaches can not make players better then what the hell are they doing coaching?.....................................
dont be so obtuse. They can teach technique and practice the right way, but that doesnt make the ball go in the basket if the player doesn't have the eye or the ability. Coaches build teams, motivate teams, decide playing time, strategy etc. So yes genius, you still need a coach even if you can't expect him to turn Derrick Roberts into JJ Redick.
