I love the argument about free throws being all coaching too. Guess who was the National coach of the year last year? Bruce Weber, Illinois. Guess whose team this year shoots 62% from the line, worst in the Big 10 and one of the worst in the county? You gots it, Illinois. Coaches cannot make shots for players and they cannot change below average shooters into good ones. Does not happen.

And I am objective about this. SMU shoots free throws better than #8 Illinois. That does NOT make Tubbs a better coach than Bruce Weber in any way. Its up to the players to make free throws, and open 15 footers and layups for godsake.

I am talking about the talent level on this team not being able to do those things, nothing to do with Tubbs. Exactly, he can't teach guys who can't do those things at this level...tells you where we are right now.

The college coaches job is to hammer the fundamentals, create and ingrain in the players mind the offensive and defensive scheme, adjust game plan to address strengths of the opposing team and to manage the substitution patterns to create favorable match ups. This is the "coaching" side. The other part of the college coaches job is recruiting. In other words the coach is not only responsible for the x's and o's but also for the guys that are running them. You can say that we do not have the talent or you can say that we cannot manage the fundamentals. Unfortunately in the college game, the coach is on the hook for BOTH of these things.

I am in the unfortunate position of having been against the Tubbs hire from the beginning, still not being sold on him and still agreeing that he deserves some time to show progress. I never thought he would be able to do what he was purported to be able to do, which is attract the best Dallas area HS talent. But he's still in on one guy and we'll see how that goes.

I agree that the talent isn't there and to suggest it is is foolish.

I just point out Wojcik because I told JT that I would and SMU has now played his team twice and lost both games. Neither team has much talent and both are in the process of rebuilding. I would not want Tulsa's record; they have some terrible losses. But they swept us and have a better conference record, which are good signs to me that Tulsa is ahead of SMU at this point, despite the overall records.

Because Tubbs was only given a four year contract, we have to make a decision on him next year after three years. If SMU wasn't willing to give Tubbs a five year deal (wich is pretty standard) from the beginning, SMU should not have given him a contract at all. Three years is not enough time to judge a coach. Of course, SMU could always extend him after this season, but how likely is that given his performance and the fact that we have a lame duck AD who is also on medical leave, how likely is that?Unfortunately for Tubbs and those that support him (even begrudgingly), he really hasn't done a damn thing to justify an extension.

Blunt Pony, of course the college game is both, but you can't give blame or credit for that matter to the current coach for the previous coach's recruiting in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Thats still over half the roster. You cant expect freshmen to be leading the team.

We have one player who can put the ball in the hoop with some regularity. Hopkins. Whether he was sick last night or shadowed well, he didn't get many looks, that left it up to the rest of our cast of characters to score. They had countless opportunities. You have to be able to make a layout with players hanging all over you in college basketball. We can't seem do that. Price for Tulsa certainly had no problem doing that last night. Even when our guys are open underneath, we can't make a simple layup or a slightly more complicated reverse layup. We can't make an offhand layup. College talent should be able to do that. Which is why Fall is a project. Rack was a project, too and appears to have not improved since his freshman year. He had numerous opportunities for easy jump hooks from three feet and bricked them. Other teams know that our inside people can't hit the broad side of a barn, so why guard them. Our big men dribble every time they touch the ball. I'm sure Tubbs has told them not to, just like their HS coach probably told them, but they can't seem to help themselves. For a team to win games, you need inside scoring and outside scoring. We seem to be adequate outside, but our inside guys really need to step-up and practice, practice, practice.

good thoughts East, my only nitpik would be I do think Rack is improved, but admittedly he is a long way from being effective yet.

The Rack HAS improveda great deal, although he still needs to improve a lot more to be an impact player for us.

Regardless of what people think of the past recruiting classes, it is true that Tubbs really has only 1 class of his own- this years freshman class. A coach cannot truely be judged until he has a roster consisting of more players that he himself brought in, rather than dealing with what is left over. I agree with you there HoopFan. But if we don't get Shady or another big time recruit in this class Tubbs will actually be LOSING more talent from this years team than he is bringing in. If he does not bring in better players than the one he currently has for this class, the results will be bad.

"We're not where we need to be right now because we're young and we have inconsistent play," Tubbs said. "We're playing freshmen and sophomores, and that's difficult."

Sound familiar?

Yes it does, because by the time the freshman and sophmores turn into Juniors and Seniors, they have proven that they cannot play, hence we go back to starting freshman and sophmores.

Sorry if this comes across a cheap shot, but it is a vicious circle that we are in.

when your freshman big guys are beating out your upperclassmen on the floor, what can you do? Our best big guys are freshman right now, and its not really even very close. If in two years, we have different freshmen who knock these guys off the floor, then maybe that will mean you are finally getting better as a program. Once again you guys want to put the entire history of smu's frustrations on Tubbs shoulders. If Tubbs doesnt succeed, it will be as much smu's fault or more than his.
