A. there is no reason this team should be running the motion offense.. this team is too athletic and undisciplined to run the motion offense.. i grew up running the motion offense in high school at HP ( i stress where i went b/c the motion offense was the only offense we could run and beat other more athletic and high scoring teams)
I know the basics of the motion offense and time and time again i see these guys just passively run this offense.. you can't run the motion offense passive, its like running the option in football, if you don't put a body on someone and read their over/under pursuit the offense won't work..
i can't count how many times this season i have seen these guys set half assed screens and the defender went right between the cutter and the screener.. that should never happen..

but then again when you shoot 31% you can't win..

now we are 'too athletic'?? I don't think so, not hardly. But your points are valid. So what would you run instead of motion? More high-low action? Problem with that is our guards are small and they have a hard time getting the ball into position to start a set or even feed the key. And you are right about shooting, if you want to run set plays you need shooters who can hit from certain spots consistently and we dont have em.

I do see half [deleted] screens by these guys. That isn't going to work no matter who you are. They should be ripped a new one for that.

the other thing is, if Tubbs is a believer in motion, he has to run it to establish it with the underclassmen and then bring in guys who can play it.

I saw our guy's put out very little effort last night, and that's a big concern.

To be fair, let's see what kind of team Coach Tubbs has by the time Bamba and Morris are seniors. His current contract doesn't even buy him that much time. This basketball program has been mediocre for years, so let's not blame this on Tubbs. When I compare what I've seen from Bamba and Morris as Frosh to what we saw from Forinash, Nigel Smith, Castro, etc... in their 1st years, I'm hopeful this program will continue to improve under Tubbs...but don't expect us to catch up with Memphis anytime soon. There's nobody out there lurking to replace BHop, so the key to next year is for all these guys to improve dramatically. That's something I haven't seen but is that the coaches, the players willingness to work on their games, or just a real lack of (potential) talent? Bamba and Morris are the key. It's been a LONG, LONG time since we've had a strong front court presence and and these guys may be the key to Tubbs' future at SMU

um....excuse me....someone is forgetting that we aren't allowed to compare this team to any previous team. Each year's team exists in a vacuum....please remember that.

they don't try hard and they run ZERO offense.

don't really even try to run an offense. they are like a poorly coached middle school team.

When i say "immensley talented" i mean A LOT more talented than tulsa, rice, central florida, marshall...and so on. pure talent wise, they aren't bad at all.

If you put Devon Pearson on UT he is a pretty good player.
So is Derrick Roberts. Bamba would be an ok backup. Bhop would start.

These guys aren't that bad. They are bigger and more athletic than most of their competition this year (which isn't saying much).

I did not mean to say they are a top 10 team talent wise, just much much much better than their record.

Actually a motion offense is the best offense for a team that has poor shooters. It gives you a chance to get more inside scoring and can free up a point or 2 guard for an occasional jumper from 15 feet. But when your big men brick three foot shots, no offense can work with that. One point made above is that when your best big men are freshman its tough sledding. I would add the word, when your best big men are freshmen PROJECTS, its tough sledding. This is what a rebuilding year looks like and it ain't pretty. Next year may be better because they won't have any star player to deal with. They'll have to play as a team. And one other point, defensively this team is already pretty good. We probably have one of the lowest points against averages in the conference. Unfortunately, we also have probably the lowest points scored average in the conference.

Hopkins would probably start at least in some years-none of the rest would even get off the bench. The fact that there is someone out there that thinks these guys have that kind of talent boogles the mind.

Against Tulsa, I'll bet we shot under 40% from INSIDE the paint. Now tell me that these guys would be starting at a top 10 program.

Hopkins might start at UT bc they are thin at G. Obviously Gibson would be a starter and then it would come down to Hop and Paulino as the final starter, the other being the first gaurd off the bench. Frankly, Hop is more talented than Paulino is. But he for sure is better than any gaurds we oppose on Tulsa, Marshal, S Miss, etc etc.

I have beat this horse dead but if you look at CUSA as a whole it is not that good. Some of our players would indeed start at many other teams in CUSA and be an improvement over what they currently have.

1. Pearson- We talk about what a dissapointment he has been this season and he has been, but when you look at the stats he is 3rd in CUSA in rebounding with 7.8 a game and averages 10 points too. Other than Memphis and probably UH he would start on any other team in the conference.

2. Roberts- As much as everyone complains about his shooting, he is at 46% for the season. He in fact has the highest Field Goal % on the team from a non post player- over 4% higher than Hop. He led Houston in scoring his Sr. year from slashing, getting to the hole, and mid rang jumpers. He isn't a good 3 point shooter and is something he needs to improve to be a big impact player but at 11pts 4 boards and 2.5 assists a game he would be a starter on most CUSA teams.

3. Bamba would start most anywhere in CUSA bc of his height and defensive prescence in the paint. His offense is much further along than I ever expected as well.

Then as previously mentioned you have Hop, would start on most teams in the country, not just in poor conferences like ours. So when people say we have no talent and Tubbs can't win with such poor players I have problem believing that he cannot have a bigger impact with the talent we have. Our bench is very thin- I fully admit this. To become a better team we DO need to get better players in here. But in the meantime, ther is a decent core in place on this team and I am not sure that we are getting the most out of it.

Again please remember my frame of reference: I am comparing SMU to our oponents in CUSA who only have 4 teams in the top 192 of 334 in RPI ranking in college hoops. All remaining teams are ranked 192 or lower, including SMU. This is UNACCEPTABLE. Does everyone think it is the players? The coaching? A combo of the both? Bottom line is we should not be this poor with what we have, even if noone on the roster will ever be confused with an all american.

in addition to recruiting Hop out of high school, Rick Barnes tried to get him to transfer there two years ago. Hop didnt want to sit out a year - youve got to feel for this kid - hes a very unselfish person.
