Most embarrassing losses post death penalty.Where do you think last night's debacle ranks? I was at this disaster, and I would have to put it near the top of the list. We made a terrible North Texas defense, look like Alabama. One first down in the whole first half, and not a single point, scored against their first string. Ben Pick 6 Hicks was horrendous. Please stop letting pick 6 Hicks, throw those long out patterns... They look like knuckleballs, floating out there for the defensive back.. Will he leave SMU, with the most pick sixes in history? Offensive line got their azzes kicked. Can't pass protect, can't run block. Good thing Sonny Dykes took over the Special Teams, so we could get that kickoff returned for a touchdown. I am rewatching some of the game now, thinking ....maybe it wasn't as bad as it looked in person... I was wrong.

Re: Most embarrassing losses post death penalty.I think it’s the worst.
In other blowouts we expected it on some level...while this was going to be a tougher game than most wanted to admit I think we all thought it would be a very competitive game. Instead we looked every bit as bad as the team in 2014 that basically didn’t have a head coach. The final score does not tell the story of this game...at one point we had 24 total yards to their 27 FIRST DOWNS. No where to go but up for Sonny. I hope for the program’s sake this was an anomaly and we get there fast. I’m really glad I decided to save the cash and skip Ann Arbor.
Re: Most embarrassing losses post death penalty.I will reserve my ranking until the end of the season. This might not end up being in the top three of the most embarrassing of this season (UCONN, HBU, Tulane - plenty of other opportunities). Also, will want to see how UNT looks at the end of the year. If they improve on last year, they are a 10 game winning program.

Re: Most embarrassing losses post death penalty. We've had too many "no contest" games in the post death penalty era to even rank them. This one seems worse because too many SMU fans had developed high expectations. Too many are living in the past and assuming our football program is far superior to UNT's. Last night's game should make it abundantly clear that in the post death-penalty/SWC era, UNT has become a true Metroplex rival.
Having said all that, I was really disappointed in how we responded to the early adversity with the targeting call/ejection and then the pick 6. The only silver lining was that the team didn't quit and was still fighting in the 4th quarter...unlike the UNT game in Denton that ushered JJ out of town.
Re: Most embarrassing losses post death penalty.SMU should beat UNT year in and year out. Sorry, but we have every possible advantage:
Facilities Funding Conference affiliation Academics For us to get throttled by UNT is something I can’t explain. We out recruit them every year - as we should. So what is is? We have a good coaching staff - on paper the most experienced since Bobby Collins. We have players which -on paper - on paper should win this game. I dunno why we are so bad. Did the players quit when the last coaching staff left. Are they simply going through the motions to get their degree and move on with life? Does Sonny need to run off some players to make an example that your scholarship isn’t safe if you don’t play hard? Pony 81
Re: Most embarrassing losses post death penalty.
At some point you have to give UNT and their coaching staff credit, don't you? As for our being "superior" to UNT, I would argue that academics is not necessarily an advantage when recruiting football players. We have no huge financial advantage, as we are both G5 and both play in relatively small stadiums in front of small crowds. I would argue that TCU has a much greater "advantage" over SMU than we have over UNT.
Re: Most embarrassing losses post death penalty.Yes, you have to give UNT some credit -- they have been to 2 straight bowls. Not big bowls, but they win games. Honestly, I don't know how to judge Hicks' performance because he wasn't good, but he also was under siege all night -- how many times was he hit as he let go of the ball? The protection has to be better. Swap someone out, leave tight ends in at all times to help, move a tight end in as a blocking fullback -- something.
I also want to see Denbow play for a full game. For the few minutes he was in there, he seemed to be around the ball an awful lot. SMU! SMU! SMU!
Re: Most embarrassing losses post death penalty.
The 247s were equally suprised it wasn't a competitive game. So much for insight.
Re: Most embarrassing losses post death penalty.Right behind the 38 to 7 loss to UNT about 3 or so years ago because UNT had a worse team then and beat us by 31.

Re: Most embarrassing losses post death penalty. We're going to have to leave the TE/HB in pass protection--that's one reason I thought sacks would go up this year although I wasn't exactly sure what the offense would look like formation wise. Last year we had a pretty effective blocking TE

Re: Most embarrassing losses post death penalty.I too will be skipping the Michigan game now. Denbow did look legit in the few plays we saw him. I actually think the defense looked okay. In the first half their only tds were the pick 6, and the td due to the targeting call. But if they played 100 downs, and your offense can’t get a first down, you give out.
Will we always be subbing in that many D players, or was the staff trying to get a game time feel for everyone? Turner Coxe is going to be a beast. Our Sutton Smith (Kevin Kane’s NIU standup DE tha was an all American) . Has a high motor, chasing down WRs and RBs, 1.5 TFL in first game. The Ticket said he impressed them the most.
Re: Most embarrassing losses post death penalty. That wasn't even the most embarrassing loss in Denton in the past 5 years. It was embarrassing, but they were also favored. June's last stand was truly embarrassing.

Re: Most embarrassing losses post death penalty.yeah I was impressed by Turner Coxe too-I was never sure where he was going to fit with his size but it looks like he found a position. Too bad Tyeson Neals got hurt too-that was one of the better plays on the night when he hyperextended his knee
