My Thoughts on SMU FB

Postby SoCal_Pony » Sun Sep 02, 2018 1:29 am

You know, I had a choice tonight, either take my kids to a nursery to look at plants and then head to In-N-Out Burger, or stay at home and watch the game.

Wasn't too difficult a decision, I chose the nursery and In-N-Out. Only after I had finished my burger did I even look to see what the score was, 17-0 with NTSU driving. I didn't check PFs again until the game was over. I am fed up with this FB program. They are a bunch of inept losers. Don't know exactly why, wish I did, but I do know the one constant over these past 30 years has been Ken Pye and RGT (I am a fan of neither, both IMO failed this school athletically and most importantly, academically). Don't know if Sonny will have success here or not, hope he does. Verdict was out on Chad, but for everyone else, they were failures. Don't know if we catch lightning in a bottle and Sonny does have success here, but if we do, he will bail for greener pastures and you can't blame him. Which means for this program to have the type of sustained success that a university such as Houston does, there has to be the right structure in place at the highest levels of this school. I simply don't have the confidence in our President or Athletic Department (which ultimately means our President because our AD reports to him). So I have given up.

This is not an over-reaction to tonight's game. I just don't care. I have posted before that I have reservations about spending the resources on an IPF. Still feel that way.

Best of luck to the rest of you diehards. I thought of posting this last year but thought it would be too cruel, but if someone like PonySnob would post a picture of Ford stadium from the same angle at the beginning of the 4th quarter at each home game I think it would be enlightening. How many people will be there, 6k, 4k?. Ask yourself this question, should a school of SMU's academic stature commit the resources this school has done over the past 20 years for the non-academic appeasement of 6k, of which maybe 2,500 are students/alumni, 500 of whom will probably die in the next decade?

I attended my first SMU game when I was maybe 6 years old. SMU was always going to be the school I attended. I got to live through the Pony Express years, they were amazing. I can truthfully say, if SMU were to shut down its program tonight, it wouldn't mean anything to me, other than how that would impact our BB program, which I still have hope for.

I'm thinking back now to when Ford was under construction. I told RGT he was building a mausoleum. He disagreed. I think I have been proven correct.

Having survived the death penalty, the break up of the SWC and our wandering through the desert via the WAC and then CUSA, I'm afraid I will have to continue following and supporting my Mustangs. As I think Coach Bennett once said "they might be dogs, but they are MY dogs". It has been one heck of a roller coaster ride following this program. The season is young and I've not lost all hope yet.

Yeah I’m sort of right there too. Last night I decided to take my sons to the park and have fun with them instead of watching the game. When we got home it was half time and I pulled up the score and what a joke. I feel the same way after Chad that no matter who comes here and actually finds success, they will leave. We sit back and pray for a Gary Patterson but those don’t exist anymore. This program hit its ceiling with June Jones - how terrifying is that??

All JJ needed to keep things rollin' was a nap and the foresight to classify the IPF as a cornerstone of player safety.

I'm with SoCal on this one. Am also worried that BBall is headed in this direction too. Does not mean I will not continue showing up though. I was there last night and observed the following first hand:

UNT team beat us solidly in all three phases of the game.
UNT beat us in marketing and promotions vs. anything we have put forward in last 30 years.
UNT game atmosphere was electric and was better than any that SMU has put forward in last 30 years. If you were there, you saw it before and during the game.

We still have a prettier campus and more beautiful stadium which will continue to be enjoyed by the 4,000 suckers (like myself) that keep showing up year after year.

So Cal and Ponytime +1

So how does UNT land a fine QB and we land a pick six hicks type with other issues?

Transfer market. Kind of like SMU did with Gilbert, but not like Chad did with Peavy and Gillens who could not even unseat Hicks!

Me neither. Don't get me wrong, I wanted to puke last night, but that's my reaction whenever we lose to anyone, whether it's by a lot or a single point.

It is interesting that when Morris and Jones and Bennett were here, fans allowed a little learning curve (i.e. "he doesn't have his players here yet"), and there definitely were some times it looked like players were pausing to think about assignments (I guess). The systems are mostly the same, I gather, but each coach wants certain things done certain ways. We were hesitant at times and UNT wasn't -- not good.

This is going to be a bumpy season, but I'm still optimistic about this coaching staff and what they can do.

SoCal, it is hard to argue with these points. I will stay the course. Why? Cause it’s what I’ve done for 40 years. But in looking for the why’s of our very disappointing ride post-DP, I am not sure there are many things you could point to for such long term futility other than 1). A perpetual black cloud over the Hilltop, or 2). an inherent problem with either the athletics program, the administration, or both. I don’t know where else to begin exploring.

But if nothing else, maybe it’s just time to say maybe we need a change, and that needs to be at the very top. Award a gold watch, have a party, offer thanks and praise all the way around. And then pull the trigger and hand off the reins to a new and energetic leader. Really, what is there to lose.

We are a D II school masquerading as a rebuilding D I-A football program.

I've stopped blaming Pye, the Death Penalty, Dale Hansen's investigation, or any other [deleted] that happened in the 80's, That was generations ago. All that's left is a school that it trying really hard to hold onto the past but does not have the resources, alumni base, or the commitment to compete with the modern state of college football.

When I was in school 15 years ago we were blaming all the same things, giving all the same solutions, and had all the same dreams of reclaiming our elite status we achieved before we were born. Absolutely nothing has changed expect our entire program is now on a downward trajectory.

Well, there are the "might have beens" of different sorts. 2016 commit David Moore who eventually went to Memphis left for Garden City CC at the start of fall practice this year. Funny, his withdrawal note from Memphis read a lot like the one when he gave up on SMU. Perhaps more importantly, 2017 commit(?) Charlie Brewer went to Baylor and got hurt last night against ACU. I do think he had a good freshman year.

If one or the other of the freshmen got a few snaps I missed it. CP said in another post he was not ready to give up yet and I agree but it sure does not seem a time to save a redshirt if Brown is the answer.

If Sonny doesn’t turn it around in the next several years, it should just be shut down. I think he does though.

Our biggest problem now is no fans. My dad was one of the biggest diehard SMU fans and he passed away 2 weeks ago. I’m sure everyone has lost people on their row since the average SMU fan is 60+ now. Aren’t our big donors just a couple old guys? Will their kids continue to donate? If we don’t start winning big soon, we will average 5k.
