I think SMU is now TCU in the 1970s and 1980s hiring F.A. Dry., Billy (No) Toe-hill and Jim Shofner. I've agreed with exactly 1 maybe 2 football coaching hires out of the last 7. Most of these guys had the personality of F.A. Dry, Billy No-Toe and Shofner. Big Cigars went shopping in the left over discount bin in hiring a good ole West Texas boy in Sonny Dykes in a era where top P5 assistants are now getting in the 1.8-2.5 Million range. So if we want to compare SMU to TCU that's the biggest difference. TCU was willing to pay BCS money when they were a G5 to retain Coaching talent. SMU hired a guy with a contract where the school that fired him is paying his salary
That's because we do not undestand Turner's role. My ex-husband, a former CEO of a fortune 500 company, said the same thing when I questioned why he and his secretary spent all afternoon in a hotel room 4 times a month. I just didn't understand hiis role in the company and the demands of his job. Silly me.

After Bennett was fired, we went 0 fer. After Lei guy quit, we had a tough season. Only when we get a new coach do we learn how empty the cupboard really is. Then we improve and then we go 0fer again. I think we'll just be really bad every four years or so.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

I view SMU in an impossible "Catch 22" situation. Because we are not in a P5 conference our recruiting will always be limited. The job this staff has done this year is as good as it can get with the preponderance of the class 3 star kids. We will never be able to get that young super coach and supporting staff because the P5 programs will lure them away for enhanced careers and more money. Unless the AAC should suddenly become the P6 conference all the schools in the conference are relegated to the same situation. A situation the NCAA condones with their obvious preferences and support to the P5 schools in every aspect. The question then becomes whether or not it is worth having a football team that cannot be advanced to another level of conference, TV revenues and costs millions of dollars beyond those generated to the detriment of tuition costs and the general fund. At some point in the near future some decisions need to be made regarding a program stuck in quick sand and no real options to change. Maybe NCAA football needs a system like the English soccer leagues wherein the bottom 3 teams of a top league are relegated down to a lower league and the top 3 teams from the lower league are moved up to the top league. At least in this soccer situation there is huge interest in maintaining a program and huge pressure to not be relegated. In the soccer scenario there would be serious interest in insuring a good program and huge interest levels in improving all aspects of a program. In the interim, the P 5 people rule and everyone else struggles with little prospects to improve or change based on conditions beyond their control.

The hope is to replicate TCU's success and to have a lucky window open, as it did for them. Easier said than done.

That ship sailed long ago, and Kenneth Pye made sure we missed it.
