backup QB is the most popular guy on a team when the offense is going bad, but would be nice to give some of the younger guys some snaps to gain some experience in games that are obviously out of hand like the 1st 2 games have been

Can he throw above his receiver's knee?

I don’t understand why the other QBs didn’t get to play. I would want my players getting in the reps and game time. Besides, we have absolutely nothing to lose.

I suspect the backups don't get any reps because the coaches figure Hicks is the best we've got (based in large part on experience) and know that he is very fragile, so they don't want to destroy his confidence by pulling him. That's the only logical explanation I can come up with but if Sonny isn't going to take advantage of the rule that allows players to play in 4 games w/o burning their RS, I have to wonder what his plan is if Hicks goes down with an injury before this season is over with.

I haven't seen him play since he got to SMU but I did see a lot of his high school video and he was one of the most raw QBs I've seen SMU sign with inconsistent throwing stances and delivery. BUT he definitely has a strong arm and athleticism. Based on his high school videos I thought he would need about 2 years of seasoning to hit the field

Athletic. Definitely a leader - the kids loved him in the spring.

Upshaw improved significantly in the fall, so the fact that he has pulled ahead of Upshaw on the depth chart says something.

He is a raw passer. He isn't going to read coverages and go through a progression at this point. He would have been more successful in CM offense at this point than this one.

I think the coaching staff is trying to give the WR and Hicks as much time on the field together as possible to try and start clicking.

If they didn't see potential in the offense working at all this season, I think you would have seen Brown in there last night to at least provide a threat on the zone read because we couldn't throw a lick. Personally, I probably would have made the switch. But I think they want tape that they can show to the players and educate them on what they are doing wrong. There were still a lot of incorrect routes last night.

I'm getting the impression that this route tree may have a lot of options in it, like June's did. The WR and QB aren't on the same page on which route option is expected to be run under different conditions.

Brown looks the part. I don't know much about him.

But put him in and you have a raw true freshman under siege throwing to unproven receivers, rather than a junior under siege throwing to unproven receivers.

Offense has been anything but a well-oiled machine so far, but it has to be Hicks, at least for now.

The back up QBs need to get reps. A lot of our scheme now mirrors Auburn’s offense (believe me I know it when I see it - and as much as I hate to say this, it works, too - Ask Nick Saban). I wonder if they are practicing Aubie’s jet sweep play? I’m not sure Ben Hicks can manage this offense without a lot of mental errors. It will take time to master. The first half gave me hope.

I would think they don’t play Brown until HBU. You don’t want a true freshman, raw talent playing against teams like TCU and Michigan. You’d destroy his confidence,

Chandler Morris playing freshman High School football had substantially better technique than William Brown as a High School Senior. He was never supposed to see the field this year. He needs to at least retain a redshirt

Makes me sick that we didn't want/get my friend's son. UH has him and he's going to redshirt.
