May have to give this some time

Post by Rebel10 »

Coach Dykes has the best recruiting class in G5 coming in at this point. And with the 27 million dollar facility that with help recruiting and practice. Not saying he will do like Willie Taggert did at USF and 4 Stuart top G5 recruiting classes but who knows, he might. Not saying he won’t need to make staff adjustments along the way. I like Coach Lashlee and hope he can get the offense going better than it is. But it took Coach Taggert about 3 years to get rolling but when he did USF was a force in the AAC. I think Coach Dykes can do the same thing the way he is recruiting.

Fans were about to run Coach Taggert out of town in his first 2 years but those high level recruits started to kick in in his 3rd year and the rest was history. Again, not saying this will definitely happen but it could.

Do you think it is a problem with needing new players for a new scheme? Or were the CM classes overrated?

It's not like Morris was bringing in the top class in the AAC every year he was here, so I wouldn't say his recruits were "overrated" but yes...Sonny and his staff need to recruit over most positions and bring in bigger, stronger, faster guys for this program to compete against Top 25 and above average football teams. It's amazing how much easier it is to "execute" your schemes when you have bigger, stronger and faster guys than your opponent.

At this point I do think Coach Morris was a little more creative in his play calling than Coach Lashlee regarding the offense. Both run Malzahn’s offense just different play calling. With that being said Coach Morris did not have bad recruiting classes but Coach Dykes seems to be doing better. No knock on Coach Morris there. As far as defense goes does Coach Kane run a 3-4 or a 3–3-5?

It would be interesting to see how the o-line and receivers, etc., could gel if SMU started with Cupcake U, rather than NTSU (so weird to call that a good team but it is), TCU, Michigan, etc.

They ain't ours until they sign. Morris had classes in the 50s too at this time of year. They were No. 56 on Scout the day he left and No. 49 on Rivals. Almost without fail the Top G5 recruiting classes get raided late in the recruiting season. We'll find out on the early signing date whether they are still committed or looking around for the Bigger Better Deal. Which game do you want them to attend to "feel the color and pageantry" around SMU football?

I agree Stallion. Again, no knock on Coach Morrris’ recruiting classes or players he got to transfer to SMU.

I agree, it will hard to hold onto these multiple offer guys if they come to a game with 5k fans.

We will find out whether Sonny and his staff can sell the potential of SMU. We can talk about his promotion all day long but I really think Chad was anxious to bail because he was not convinced he could sell SMU beyond what he had been able to (meaning middle of the pack AAC level recruits).

Morris was selling recruits off 1 win (1 month to recruit), 2 wins and 4 wins. Sonny was selling recruits off a 7 win bowl team. Big difference

Whether we actually participated in that bowl is debatable though
