Unsportsmanlike Penalty

Post by Jackets N Pones »

Does anyone know what Coach Dykes said to draw the penalty?

Someone said he touched the official making the call almost mandatory, but I did not see that if it happened.

53:20 or so is the 4th down. Exchange with Sonny and official ensues.

If Sonny was so upset, he could have used a challenge flag rather than whine and draw the only penalty ever by a coach.

They brushed elbows and that is what I heard triggered it. Very lame call. What else, however, could you expect in the Big House in a close game?

For some reason I thought it was unsportmanlike to back-back timeouts but it was the other way. Nevertheless though, he could have challenge had he not take the back-back timeouts on the 1 yard line. We knew Michigan was going to score but I guess I could understand 1 time out since it was 4th down. Had we kept the other one, it could have been used for the drive and maybe Pick Hicks wouldn't have felt "pressured" to throw the ball. Those last 7 minutes of the 1st half really were a series of unfortunate events less our 1st TD.

This play: 4th & 1 at MICH 49 (5:16 - 2nd) Chris Evans run for 1 yd to the 50 yard line for a 1ST down: While I understood Dykes anger, it's in Michigan and it was 1 yard. I saw it and said no way that was converted but had he kept a timeout he could have challenged.

This play: 1st & 10 at MICH 36 (0:00 - 2nd) (really 1:15 ish) Ben Hicks pass intercepted for a TD Josh Metellus return for 73 yds for a TD, (Quinn Nordin KICK). It was a 1st down play and he could have just played cautious given that we were getting the ball the next half. This is what killed any chance of staying with Michigan and possibly getting the upset.

The only silverlining is we got see William Brown start the 2nd half. My only worry is he got popped so hard at the end. I'm beyond shock that wasn't targeting from their replays during the game, it sure looked like the defender led with his helmet. I'm glad Sonny took him out. It was unwinnable but go ahead and put another 6 (given this missed xp) because thats how it would have ended 45-26.

Dykes had every right to be pissed on that play. We shouldn't have needed a challenge - later in the game, the refs reviewed our spot on 3rd down on their own. It was a horrible officiating job.

The vast majority of refs understand why the coach is pissed in that situation and let it go or give them a sideline warning. BS cal.

I agree, especially when itΓÇÖs the same official that had the spot marked short of the first down that threw the flag.

No way. Arkansas does not have favorable refs. Arkansas has never lost a game that was not due to bad calls. Until yesterday anyway.

Big 10 officials were giving terrible calls vs non conference opponents all day. It wasn't just in this one.
