...They were just a superior team, plain and simple...another great start and another letdown, the polar opposite of the Mavs lately...Sqeaky can penetrate at will, as advertised, but UAB wouldn't have even had a shot of winning if it wasn't for McDonald...that kid made 3 after 3 after 3, we should've had this game, another dissapointing senior night
I'm never happy with a loss, but I was glad to see our team actually show up to play tonight. UAB tried to push the fast break every chance they got, and our transition D was no comparison to the Tulsa debacle. Much more competent and competitive and focused. And I'm not saying anybody should give him one, but Bamba "The Stone Mason" Fall really does deserve a high end 12-pack for his performance at the line down the stretch. Did he miss any? For a while, he was single-handedly keeping us in the game.
We made shots in the first half, and we had what, 6 or 8 three-pointers tonight? You're always going to look like a better coach when your players hit shots. Honestly, I was afraid we were going to get drilled tonight -- I thought most of the guys played hard tonight. I loved the fact that the first basket of the night was scored by Ryan Hopkins. Bryan played good defense and passed well, but I sure would have liked to see more points out of him. I wonder how much that crash in the bench had to do with his second-half shooting, which looked like he was aiming through out-of-focus glasses. Hope he feels better before the next game.
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
He hit his head as time expired in the first half. Speaking of which, how 'bout that 'play?' before the halftime buzzer? UGLY!
Our end of clock management is one of the most frustrating things. EVERY time we hold the ball 25 feet out until 8 or 9 seconds then scramble around "trying" to get Hop or Dez open and then flail up a crappy shot or, often, no shot at all. We don't do much better when it's just the shot clock and not the game clock that's ticking away. You've got to go without about 12 seconds left, set some screens or dribble penetrate, draw the defense, and kick --- plus set up for the rebound put back. It's okay if you leave 1-2 seconds to defend the other basket, just get off a good shot.
I hope Jimmy is running these situations A LOT in practice every day. If he's not, then here is area where I think we have to put some responsibility on his shoulders.
That's too bad, couldn't see it very well. He must have crashed hard. If we could have gotten 10-12pts out of him, might have won the game.
We played pretty tough, especially considering we got (basically) no points from BHop. Getting just a few points from Ryan Hopkins, Donatas Rackauskas and Ike Ofuegbu helped. That McDonald guy (UAB) was unbelievable. I saw in the box score that he went 12 of 21 from the floor, but I don't remember him missing all night.
the UAB kids were having fun and were relaxed during the warmups. It was strange to see Smu looking uptight compared to a jovial blazer team. It made me laugh when during the warmups an assistant coach had a package of gum and was giving a piece to each player as they got in the rebound line for the layup drill. Each player was like, "hells yeah, thanks dude."The UAB coaches were talking to SMU fans about the twins who graduated from UAB last year and their ncaa tourney run. It was the first time I had seen another team chit-chating with the crowd.
go smu.
