He did not defer. He chose defense which is the obvious call always so you know what you need to do when you get the ball.

You have 3 options at the toss. Offense, defense, or end of field. We chose defense and they chose the south end.

Don't understate the wisdom of Navy choosing the south end zone so they did not have to deal with the increased crowd noise of the 18 students left on the party pavilion in the north end.
