But second, and this is what I first thought of when it was suggested or reported on PonyFans a couple years ago that he followed his agent's advice in turning down the final SMU offer - it was almost an example of the what has been called the "Abilene option." That's when a couple, trying to decide a vacation destination and one wants Loveland and skiing and the other Las Vegas and gambling (either of which would have been okay if they'd been able to talk it out) but they "compromise" and go to Abilene for a MacMurray football game.

Not to mention that ANY contract extension at age 75 while the program is on probation does not exactly allow you and your agent to negotiate from a position of strength...although others would argue that if SMU wanted to compete against the big boys, you do what you need to do and hope it all works out in the end.
