SMU player's grandfather sparked probe

UNIVERSITY PARK – Max Williams, a former SMU player, whose grandson, Matt, currently plays on the team, said he saw something he didn't like within the program and that he instigated the NCAA investigation into the men's basketball program.

Williams declined to reveal what it was that he didn't like.

According to multiple sources, a relative of one of the players has alleged that he gave coach Jimmy Tubbs money to pay for meals, which would be a NCAA violation.

The month-long investigation hasn't found any major rules violations, according to sources.

Sources said Tubbs used his own money to buyhamburgers for freshmen Bamba Fall and Brian Morris.

NCAA bylaw 16.11.1.5 states that an individual of a member institution can buy an occasional meal for a student athlete or an entire team.

Tubbs declined comment.

"It's just something that happened," Max Williams said. "I don't like it. I guess we'll find out everything soon. I've known Jimmy Tubbs for a long time and I like him."

Athletic director Jim Copeland is handling the investigation himself. Normally, the compliance office is contacted when a potential rule infraction has been committed.

Tubbs, players and several coaches have spoken to Copeland and NCAA investigators. SMU also hired an independent firm to help in the investigation.

SMU is the only university that has a player's grandparent tell on the coach for buying a player a hamburger. Wow. SMU is bad for a reason and it is this kind of crap that keeps us bad. Who cares if someone gets a free hamburger. Take a look what goes on in Austin, at OSU, or in Baylor right now. You will find a lot more than free hamburgers.

Tubbs is a bigger man than me...if all this is true and I was the coach, I would kick Matt off this team.

And I don't think he is that great a player to begin with.

Wonder how the team...Morris and Fall specifically, will respond to all this.

Sounds like Matt is just [deleted] and his grandfather was mad that he didn't play this year. Thanks a lot Max!

How many times has someone heard their significant other say, "I'm pissed off at you..." to which you respond, "why?" and the significant other says, "I'm not saying."

It's hard to see those statements in the DMN and not call them chickensh*t.

"I didn't like something...not saying what it is, but I didn't like it."

Maybe it wouldn't come across so bad if it was any other school that doesn't have the history w/ the NCAA that SMU does.

Come to think of it, I don't like how Baylor is suddenly winding up with all these recruits etc after a murder scandal. Maybe I'll call the NCAA.

To bad the DMN can put a story in their rag on this today, and not on the start of spring football. I did notice they ran a story on the aggies starting spring football though

Wasn't Matt redshirted due to surgery this year? If so, I can't see why his grandfather would be angry at Tubbs about that.

Wonder what he would have done if he did not like Tubbs.

Anybody see the contradiction in the first two statements??????

Is the grandson a scholarship player or a walk on?

Oh my god! The issue should be that Morris had a hamburger purchased for him and not 2 or 3 for Fall. Bamba needs to be on a 6 cheeseburger a day training regimen.

This story is a waste of time and it should be wrapped up asap.
