to be fair- I personally don't remember Dedman's name involved in the DP. Cox, Clements, Blount and others but I don't think we should point fingers unless we got some evidence that they were involved.

Think of how many corrupt athletic departments there are around the country. Admittedly, we were among them, but by all accounts, we run perhaps the cleanest (almost TOO clean) program in the country. However, if someone wants to put up the cash to build a cutting-edge venue that would draw bigger and better players to SMU, they can call it Al Capone Court at John Gotti Arena, for all I care. Hell, if top players start coming to play in it, they can name it Charles Manson Coliseum. The name over the door is meaningless, other than as a means of getting the money in place (see the Fleet Center, Staples Center, the MCI Center -- which as of this week is the Verizon Center, Quaalcom Stadium, etc.) Houston used to have a baseball stadium called Enron Field, of all things. Get the money in here, build first-rate facilities and watch the players and the victories follow.

And Baltimore had PSInet Stadium (I had to look at that after losing a ton of money on their #$%^ stock). I guess I would look at it in the progressive way that the Methodist Church looks at everything. We must take a sinner's repentence as sincere. And if as part of that repentence he takes his illgotten gains and gives them to a church institution, well so much the better. I'd accept his terms with a simple proviso, that if he goes to jail (assuming arguendo that he's convicted this time) again, the name comes off.

for sure take the money, spin it as "helping him redeem himself". Best of both worlds.

Is SMU's reputation really worth only $40 million? If the guy was convicted there is no way you could take that money. That was the original hypothetical scenario. Now, if he is found innocent, or at least not guilty, then I guess its a quite different debate.

How about we just work on getting the Trammel Crow, Dr. Pepper or Mrs. Baird's Arena and make this not only hypothetical, but moot?
