Leaving Memphis Friday morning
SMU did what it could against a more talented UAB team on Thursday afternoon. It was nice to see Nolan Richardson in the stands. He's a close friend of UAB coach Mike Anderson.

Felt bad for Bryan Hopkins, SMU's senior point guard, who finished his career with 13 points. Hopkins is a good guy who never lived up to the hype. But I think Hop is talented enough to play in the pros somewhere. Italy, Japan, Spain. NBDL. NBA. Who knows?

Talked to SMU president Gerald Turner who told me he expects athletic director Jim Copeland to return to school in April. Copeland is recovering from kidney surgery.

Turner said the search to replace Copeland, who is retiring May 31, is a slow process.

And by the way, Isaac Hayes wasn't at his place on Wendesday night. He suffered a mild stroke a few weeks ago, and he's doing fine. At least that's what the bartender told me.

Honestly, I think Calvin Watkins does a hell of a job. He gets nowhere near the space he needs, and has started using this blog to get a few more nuggets out there. It seems like he has a cordial relationship with many of the coaches and players, but also will say something tough, if it needs to be said.

I hope Cope is feeling better.

A bar? Who goes to a bar on a business trip?

Calvin deserves the frontpage weekly--if not biweekly.

Speaking of the front page, all I could say was WOW when I saw the half page picture of TT and K-State on the front page of the DMN and Sports Day. I was expecting huge coverage, but not section A front page for the 8 & 9 seeds in the Big 12.
