TCU obervations

Post by leopold »

OK, we won on to next week. Couple things I noticed:

- Our weakness on defense to be the angry RB that just runs people over. We watched it with Siggers at UNT against us and then Anderson did it to us yesterday. TCU put 14 points up on us in the first half based largely on multiple missed tackles. We need Moore back, soon.

- Am I crazy? Is Denbow punting? I was at a bar watching the game here in Boston and couldn't tell what the announcer said so I must have missed something but I thought I saw him punting it, and while we got some favorable bounces, wasn't entirely impressed.

- We also need Robledo back and someone needs to put the snapper in a tackling drill to wake him up. I'm ecstatic that we can hit a reasonable FG, but we still aren't good on FG/XP teams.

- The OL held up reasonably well against the TCU pash rush yesterday. I was worried, but I think Shane only got sacked twice. Part of that is on Shane and the play calling, but the line did themselves proud yesterday.

- Granson is a gift. Dude catches the ball well and is a threat to break tackles every time he touches the ball. FANTASTIC pickup.

- McBryde is also another find. Stepped into Moore's role and didn't miss a beat. Again, a couple missed tackles but on the whole I can't complain. Somebody send Gundy a case of something, because he did us a favor.

- Our defensive backs may be the biggest surprise so far - great coverage on deep balls. Really happy with the game they played.

Yes, it seems Denbow is the punter now.

Granson is awesome.

Your best point is the secondary. Ar'mani Johnson, in particular. He couldn't get mop-up time last year, and I cringed when he got on the field a few weeks ago, but he has been awesome -- knocked away at least 3 passes yesterday from the hands of the frog receivers. He was on Reagor a lot yesterday, and was awesome.

Denbow punted a 55 yarder and a couple of shorter ones. Johnson is really improving, heads above the ArkSt. game. Mc Bryde had trouble in pass coverage in the middle, but was good against the run. Granson provides such a weapon, love it. Buechele only one sack I think, but don't run the QB sneak again. TV missed the 2 point extra point, would love to have seen that formation. Announcers were expecting TCU to crush us, but were pretty fair in their coverage. Lashlee coming up with exciting plays and Buechele putting the deep pass on the mark. Roberson and Proche almost don't miss. Congrats to the entire team and coaches.

The coaching staff didn't try to "hide" players on Saturday...instead they schemed and coached with the sole purpose to win the game, evidenced by the two point conversion.

Our FG/XP problems have been persistent, and they planned accordingly. With the later missed XP, this was crucial. It also sent a telling note that we were playing a high-risk high-reward strategy.

When was the last time a Mustang win was focused on the defense? A LONG time ago...

Get treatment, make adjustments, and get ready...this is going to get fun and physical against USF.

Help me remember. What favor did Gundy do for us?

Didn't mean it literally, just saying that OSU passing McBryde has worked to our advantage.

As I understand it he was interested in becoming a Cowboy until they passed, apparently due to his neck injury. If I'm remiss, I apologize.

This is a game summary/highlights on youtube. It shows the formation, it looked like we split the line and somehow got the ball wide to our running back.
I'm still looking for the helmet toss, the one that got Sonny so angry, that he came close to getting thrown out of the game. From the stands all you see is a helmet come shooting out of the line and going almost 40 feet in the air. In the least it should have been a penalty, facemask, etc. and negated the interception in the end zone.

Thanks for putting this on the board.
This had to be a facemask call, he used it as a handle to toss the helmet. Would this have negated the play altogether or simply assessed on the Frogs back to the 10 (half the distance from the 20)? The toss obviously happened after the interception, but I can't tell the timing of actually grabbing the facemask.

These Big 12 refs were really bush league, couldn't even mark the ball at the end of plays.

I'm thinking personal foul and probable ejection from the game had any zebras seen it.

I heard a comment that the game had AAC officials. Does anyone know for sure which conference officials were used?

As terrible as they were, I thought maybe we had dusted off an old WAC crew.

I think it is common to have the officials from the visiting team in non conference games.

800 lb gorilla. Our kicking game Sure we made some barely over the crossmember FGs. But was any kick not meet with extreme anxiety just before the kick? Did not a single heart in Mustang land not go pitter patter on every kick? No doubt this can cost us more than one game.
