We Need to Look at Scheduling UConn

Postby leopold » Mon Sep 30, 2019 11:21 pm

Yes, I know UConn is leaving the AAC. Good - let them. But we need to look into scheduling them OOC.

I'm for this partially because I'm living in frickin' Boston, but also because our OOC schedule in the future features the likes of Lamar, Houston Baptist, Stephen F. Austin and Abilene Christian:

THESE SCHOOLS DO NOTHING FOR US. Hell, at least Texas State is FBS.

UConn is an FBS school that allows for a Northeast presence, and gives us a way to schedule them in basketball. If they don't want to schedule us in basketball, then insist on a 2-1 in football.

BUT GET THE DAMNED FCS SCHOOLS FROM TEXAS OFF THE SCHEDULE.

I agree that we should get the FCS schools off the schedule. Would much rather play CUSA, independents, and Sun Belt teams than FCS.

I can’t stand watching any FBS team play FCS

The problem is that if you want to schedule a game against one of the "big dogs" in college football, i.e., a top 25 program that can draw 70,000 plus, you aren't likely to get a home/home so when you take one of those paycheck/opportunity road games, you have to find someone willing to play at Ford without a home/home deal and leads to FCS opponents.

Getting back to the original post, while playing UConn in football does nothing for me, if they go independent, they might be willing to play road games against G5 schools without a return game just because of the difficulties they could have in scheduling. It might also help schedule home/home or neutral site games with them in hoops which would not be bad.

UConn is going to end up being a punching bag for every good p5 school wanting a breather before their conference games start.

Our future OOC is atrocious. Not sure why we are playing a single FCS school to begin with. Although, Hart lovesssssss FCS teams we've never heard of, i.e. basketball

I would rather have 7 road games or an 11 game schedule than play FCS teams.

Well, I don't remember him scheduling every OOC opponent in the past two years or so, so I'm going to go ahead and say that a number of those pickups belong to either Hart or everyone's favorite punching bag, Morris. (Makes sense, I can absolutely see Morris trying to pad his schedule)

I do know the last OOC game we've scheduled is the series with Vandy, which I love, and I see La Tech on the schedule, which I'm fine with. Frankly, if his OOC opponents while he was HC of Tech and Cal are any indication, the man isn't going to shy away from top quality opponents. Any body hear about the chance to get Maryland at home for a 1and1 rather than just an away game?

But back to the original point:

UConn is a good option all on their own and we need to continue that relationship. Hell, UMass isn't a bad one. But I think we all agree, no FCS schools.

Northeast presence? Contradicts everything going on with the program. Save some money and get a flight to Dallas once a year rather than insist we schedule a meaningless game way outside our area code. Need to get the old SWC foes back on the schedule. Keep TCU and add a Baylor, TT, hell even A&M.

Scheduling is done 5 years in advance in most cases. I have learned that the Arkansas/A&M Jerryworld Game contract ends in 2024. It is pretty well assumed they will go back to a home and home. Now would be the time to start negotiations with Arkansas for a game in Dallas. They will want one.

Not true - AD is ultimately responsible for the schedule. Scheduling FCS is just lazy.

Disagree on the old SWC foes - those losses suck the wind out of us for the year. We DO NOT need to go back to that. We need to be auditioning for other conferences - PAC and ACC specifically. we are NEVER getting in the Big 12 because they have 2 privates already and we add nothing to them. Bring in one lower level PAC or ACC teams, add in two FBS patsies, and TCU.
