Every kid in SE DC has a Georgetown cap, even though Georgetown is a school that they'll never attend. If Maryland can become DC's team again, we can do that (Russ Potts was their AD and put them on the map in DC). Contrast Georgetown with George Washington, and Howard three schools almost exactly the same size. Georgetown and GW are clones of each other. Yet, Georgetown has the fans, GW doesn't. Add in Howard which is a historically black college, and it isn't even on local radar. So, we can be Dallas' team. How? First, we have to win at something (hoops seems like a good start). Second, we give away lots of hats. Go to every church fair and give them 100 hats (or 100 t-shirts). Heck, you could probably get a fast food sponsor to put a coupon tag on the hat. Lastly, Russ Potts had it right, give away seats to games. If a seat is going to be empty anyway, why not give Tony Evans 500 tickets for the kids in his area?

Sorry to burst your bubble but Georgetown basketball is Georgetown basketball because of 39 years of Thompsons leading the program. SMU will be lucky to have Larry for 3-5 years and then it's over.

This meteoric Larry Brown SMU basketball revival will be gone just as quickly as he is. Enjoy it while it lasts. SMU will never be a basketball school or Dallas' team unless the entire culture changes dramatically. Which it won't.

No doubt that John Thompson was a big part of that. Quite frankly it was a 10 year process. JT, Sr. arrived in 1972 (I remember because I met him when I was in high school and he showed up at our annual hoops tourney to recruit). Georgetown was a powerhouse when Ewing arrived in the early 80's and at that point, Georgetown blew past Maryland in DC love. So, multiple final four runs will get you some love pretty quickly.

Stallion nailed it. Small local alumni fan base interested in football means you have to build a connection with other potential fans in the city. There appeared to be more SMU fans at the Tulsa game last Saturday than any game other game since TCU in 2010. And actual fans in the stands at a home game means everything to the players and coaches.
