Buechele Added To Maxwell, Manning Award Watch Lists

DALLAS (SMU) – Shane Buechele was named a mid-season addition to both the Maxwell and Manning Award Watch Lists, the organizations sponsoring the awards announced this week.

Buechele is the second Mustang named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, joining James Proche, who was on the preseason edition. The Maxwell Award is presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell, while the Manning Award honors the nation’s top quarterback.

In addition to earning Maxwell Award Player of the Week honors for his performance in the win over No. 25 Temple, Buechele was name the Walter Camp Award and Davey O'Brien Award National Player of the Week, as well as the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. He was also an Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Honor Roll selection and a Manning Award Star of the Week.

Buechele completed 30 passes for a career-high 457 yards and six touchdowns against Temple, three of which found Reggie Roberson, Jr. The six TDs tied the SMU single-game record, and the 457 yards rank fourth in a game at SMU. The junior went on to throw for 203 yards and two TDs in the win over Houston, giving him his seventh straight game with multiple passing touchdowns.

Entering the game against Houston, Buechele led the AAC with 2,122 passing yards (7th NCAA) and 18 touchdowns (10th NCAA) in 2019, and was among NCAA FBS career active leaders in passing yards per game (225.3, 11th), completions per game (18.83, 11th), completion percentage (.629, 12th) and passing yards (6,758, 18th).

Semifinalists for the Maxwell on Oct. 29 and three finalists will be announced Nov. 25. The winners of the 2019 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show December 12 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. The formal presentation will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 6.

Finalists for the Manning Award will be determined by a selected panel of national media covering college football, as well as each of the Mannings. That list will be released on Dec. 5 and the winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship in New Orleans on Jan. 13.
