SMU-Memphis draws large tv audience

Post by Donnell88 »

There were 2.95 million viewers for the SMU vs Memphis game Saturday night. Pretty good compared to USC vs. Oregon on Fox which drew 3.43 million (which started 30 minutes later).
The Memphis game drew the same number as Virginia Tech-Notre Dame, the afternoon game on NBC.

Better to compare to prior ABC 630 games to get a better comparative.

This is awesome.

With these type of results, maybe we have hope to be in a power conference one day.

Week 9 comparable spot:

Michigan vs Notre Dame 6.75MM

So we were a drag on the primetime spot but when you compare populations and conference, we did a good job.

It's the first game this yr on primetime ABC to draw less than 3M viewers (honestly expected, but still great), but the most viewed G5 game of the year.

Loved watching the game on ABC, regardless of the outcome. My wife, a Gator, said she thought it was the most exciting game she had seen in a while. Had some other friends tune in. Rooted for SMU, and loved the game.

That's the point I was going for but given the size of the schools and obviously the P5/G5 delineation; we did well.

Obviously hate that we lost and wish we wouldΓÇÖve looked better in some aspects of the game, however, that was a very exciting game to watch start-to-finish. Fought back. Covered the spread depending on when you got it. Showed we arenΓÇÖt a bunch of b1t(heΓÇÖs. Hope we win out and Memphis drops one!

The site I look at show SMU-Memphis was #1 in the demo, #2 in overall viewership Saturday night, and beat the Fox game 2.93 to 2.81 million in total viewership. See the stats here:
https://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/daily ... er-2-2019/

When was the last time that many eyeballs watched an SMU game? Had to be in the 80s.
Great night even if the end result wasn't what we wanted. It was good that we played to the end and kept it competitive. It wasn't a case where folks would see that game and wonder why these two were playing on network primetime. They both deserved to be there.
